Comment in another thread about BA that "being an airline pilot today may not be what it used to be" made me think - are there any jobs now which are better / more desireable than they used to be?

I can't think of any, but maybe it's a case of the grass being greener, or hankering after the good old days?

As long as the job has been in existence. I suppose I was thinking within the range of most people's working lives. I kind of work in IT, and it's not better now than in the 80's or 90's, for example.

Hmmm - too much Daily Mail reading, perhaps?

My missus is a civil servant and she's done OK out it but by luck more than anything else - she's in the 4th department she's worked in as others have closed and most of he ex-colleagues have been made redundant. The department she's in now has just terminated all the contract staff.

Most new entrants are on fixed term contracts and even the pension benefits have changed now.

Binmen, sorry refuse collectors (or should that be refuse collections) have it a lot easier now than my dad did in the 60's and early 70's.

Yeah, because the chance of getting getting both legs, one arm and the other hand blown off, then getting spat at by some Guardian reading lefty , then getting spat at again by an immigrant who's calling you a baby killer is WAAAAAY better than chilling out and getting pissed in Germany waiting for a Red Horde that's not coming!

Awesome!

Don't worry about the Civil Service there won't be one soon, the govt has so royally f'ked-up the country they'll be downsizing so drastically and tories will outsource sell everything off when they get in.

Anyway the pay (or total cash inc bonus& shares etc..) is still ludicrously low compared to a like for like private equivalent even if the pension benefit (even the new one) is still ludicrously high, 19% ER contribution rates for 3% EE contribution

Remember 22% of f'k all is still f'k all.

I'd say that the best place to be in at the moment is probably a receivership.

MPs (up until all the st hit the fan) have gradually learnt that they can milk the expenses system more than they used to. My mates dad used to be a Labour MP and didnt used to get fck all expenses up until about 5 years ago when he got money thrown at him to cover himself..

TV personalities - dont need ANY talent whatsoever to be on TV Now

Footballers - less skill, much more money.
