Thing is, being brutal about it, once you are dead, you never even knew you existed - just gone. So it wouldn't matter much anyway.

It's not like you will be looking down going "Oooo that was a bit of a crap way to go - DOH"
Good point.

When we're dead, we won't care how we died.
Well even if you don't believe in life after death, the original post did ask you to consider the thoughts of your family. Or maybe you don't care about them either?
No, it's just irrelavent. When you are dead, you won't exist anymore, and being that existance is utterly meaningless in its entirity, and the feelings of others are merely a byproduct of this meaningless existance, then the whole thread question - not only the part about family, is fundimentally pointless.

As was my reply.

Carry on...
So you genuinely don't care about the future heartache of your family?

Some people believe and hope there is something after you die but I wouldn't be so arrogant to tell people of either the yes or no camp that they're wrong. What makes you think you have all the answers? Tell me why there is no life afterwards, how are you so sure?
My answer is based on physics and science. What is percieved as "you" is simply a byproduct of how various connections are firing off in the brian - essentially "self" is a byproduct of the brain doing what it is supposed to do - survive and procreate at all costs. The mechanism that causes this to happen in humans is still a mystery, but then if the human brain was simple enough to understand, we would be too simple to understand it. What we do understand however, shows that the personaility changes with damage to the brain, depending on what or where.

If there was a soul, then deseases like Alzheimers would make no difference, but it does due to the physical damage to the brain causing side effects on the "self" or "Soul" or whatever anyone wants to call it.

Most religions are based around comfort on the fear of death, giving those who need it that protection that they are destined for something better after they die, using it as an excuse to control through fear (Heaven = good, hell=bad)

This is my opinion based on fact - I don't care if people believe in large magical men in the sky, nor do I care to actively disprove it. Whatever floats your boat. All ghost sightings and mediums have always been disproven, and are now in the realms of comedy TV.

I actually take great comfort in knowing that I will cease to exist completely after this is over.

Anyway I am not going to turn this into a great big "is there a god / or isnt there" - because I don't care. It's all totally irrelavent at the end of the day.

It's not though. Well, I'm happy with my beliefs, you're happy with your impending nothing, we'll agree to disagree and leave it at that.

Actually no, I really don't like adrenaline sports - I don't even like fairground rides to be honest.

I like the idea of retrofitting a V12 Jaguar engine into a Reliant Supervan III, and disintegrating into the distance.

This.

My grandfather died a year ago last weekend, peacefully in his sleep after spending a few weeks in hospital, getting weaker but with no real pain and only ever having spent one night in hospital previously since the war. He was 93 and in full possession of his mental faculties right to the end.

From what I have seen - taking your own life is an almost guaranteed way to destroy the lives of your family. Every family member, friend, even colleagues are left with an amount of "could I have done something different and stopped that happening".

In my 80's, driving a gloriously over the top supercar at full chat, with a ciggie in one hand and the steering wheel in the other, whilst getting sucked off. Preferably some time around sunset on a sunday, after a lovely weekend. Yes, I know 80+ year old peen is an awful thought, but really she shouldn't complain too much given how the rest of the day is going to pan out.

Do you have children?

My beliefs are exactly as yours are, I think about death in exactly the same way I think about the past before I was born, absolutely nothing to do with me.

The only thing that worries me is the concern that my children will be 'alright'.

No I don't have children, and I am not a children person so I won't be having any of my own. I do understand your concern for your offspring at this time whilst you are alive of course. That is what we are programmed to do yessmile .
