I have a .177 Webley Raider 10 (gas precharge 10 shot mag, fully set up with silencer etc just needs a scope fitting, as mine was worth over 2k hence i sold it seperatly) also comes with gas bottle for refils, if you are interested for 350 quid

Oh and i am over in norfolk next weekend

Blimey, lot's of air rifle threads about at the mo smile Beginnning to think we need the 'Outdoor Sports' forum smile

For ratting, you need a rifle. Even the 6ft/lb HW45 would need to be very close indeed to the target. If you're not going to get into it as a sport, then a .22 cheap Chinese lump of nastyness will do you fine. It won't win competitions, but it will kill rats.

.22 is better for rats, and beginners, as it's more forgiving - meaning it hits with so much force that you don't need the pinpoint accuracy of the .177 headshot.

If you are able to splash a bag of sand - then my ratter of choice would be Weihrauch's finest (pronounced Vy-Rowk) HW100K. A low, fixed mage scope on it, lamp, laser for ultra short range work -plus filling tanks and bits and bobs. Second hand, you are looking at less than a grand.

What the hell did you add to that to make it worth 2k? I take it you just stuck a high end S&B on it? (and if so - why?)

I bought a cheap Chinese .22 with scope for dealing with rats in our garden. Has proved to be pretty good (for £30).

I appreciate there are many on here advocating far superior kit, but if it is just for pest control I wouldn't bother.

I have found it to be accurate enough to do the job.

To be honest, ı'd keep away from pcp rıfles ıf you're just doıng a bıt of rattıng. I've had a few and ın the end just got pıssed off wıth muckıng about wıth bottles and the lıke and went back to a .177 sprınger to complement the shotgun(s) and .22lr rıfle.

PCP are expensıve for what they offer - ıf you want to get serıous about shootıng ı'd certaınly advıse doıng FAC because you'll probably get bored of your expensıve aırgun quıckly and end up goıng for a rıfle (eıther rf or cf) anyway.

Just my $0.02 and from my own experıence...

This bloke's site still lists them, might be worth dropping him an email or phone call?

I've read online that someone had a .20cal and managed to pump it to over 11ft/lbs off 8 pumps but that's the only ref I can find. If yours is putting out 11ft/lbs, you're going to have to get it shredded.

I read it as that the scope was worth £2k, so he sold the scope independent of the gun.

I think I'll get about handing it in then if its such an issue.
I really wouldn't turn up at the local police station with an illegal firearm, they are not just going to say cheers mate and take it off your hands.

Google handing in a gun.
You can't win, can you!! Get in trouble for doing the wrong thing, get in trouble for doing the right thing. Just keep it and don't tell anyone, okgo. Oh, wait... hehe

Don't see the problem. Inner city gangland warfare could be fun to watch. Bang. Pump-pump-pump-pump-pump-pump-pump-pump. Bang. Pump-pump-pump-pump-pump-pump-pump-pump. Bang. Pump-pump-pump-pump-pump-pump-pump-pump. Bang. Pump-pump-pump-pump-pump-pump-pump-pump. Bang.

Just to be sure. When the insurance ask what happened say a candle fell over and started a small fire.

Good plan, I'll give him a call. As said I don't fancy getting nicked for a gun I bought ten years ago on the net.

WOW, thanks for all the input, some real good pointers & advise, must admit I don't see me picking this up as a hobby (got too many already), so wasn't planning on spending a fortune as it will be primarily for pest control & probably a bit of paper target shooting in the field.

I reckon £150 would be my top budget

Get a nıce sprınger, 4x40 scope, maybe a moderator.

.22 has a more pronounced trajectory but the heavıer pellet gıves more stoppıng power. For short range rattıng (say under 20 yards) ı'd probably go for .22.

Job's a goodun wink

Weıhrauch are generally pretty good, Aır Arms do a very well respected sprınger called tx200 but ı don't know ıf they're ın your budget. Don't buy the cheapest scope you can - serıous shooters may advıse to splıt your budget 50/50 but for your needs ı'd say to spend maybe 40 on the scope and 100-ısh on a 2nd hand gun.

Definitely .22 for short range rat busting. The faster more accurate .177 for longer range shooting

A second hand .22 springer will do what you want for your budget, AirgunBBS is a good forum but you will need 5 posts to see the sales section. If it's your land then you can probably get one of the guys to shoot them for free. If you do shoot them wear gloves or use a litter picker for the dead ones as they carry disease!

Think thats the wrong way around actually.

.177 is by far the more forgiving as it has a less pronounced trajectory than .22, so actually its easier to shoot accurately unless you're very experienced/practiced.

And whichever calibre you use you need the level of accuracy to ensure a headshoe each time.

I've got a Crossman Ratcatcher which kills rats easily, very accurate too so clean kills. The supplied scopes are aren't the best though though so could really do with changing.
