That's not really like for like though is it?

A tin can at 9 metres is a target of about 10x20cm. Let's say for simplicity rat's head is about 2.5x5cm. So the target is a quarter of the size and demands 4 times the accuracy.

Even if you're going for COM as opposed to a head shot (which I personally find unsporting) then you've still got a target of roughly 5x10cm. I'd love to see you group effectively with a pistol at that range. Especially when it's a fast moving target, presumably in the dark whilst being careful not to lose an eye with ricochet!

In my opinion, as a man who believes in minimising suffering, a rifle is a better bet. The OP could also hunt the likes of woodies and maybe even rabbits if wanted with the two guns I've recommended. The latter only weighs 2.2kg and could easily be handled in a confined space.

A 6 ft/lb pistol MIGHT kill a rat with a head shot at close range but the OP has no experiance so he would find the job in hand alot easier with a more powerfull more accurate easier to shoot straight rifle i belive. You might find a used theoben sirroco or simler for the money you want to spend (gas ram low recoil very accutate 12 ft/lb)

Following the posts at the very start of the thread I'd already ruled out a pistol and will only be looking at a rifle.

If the rats are inside then too much power is a hinderance. A Crossman C02 carbine will do the job, although theyre light and not brilliantly built.

Slightly off topic, but those police gun amnesty's, do they ever forensically test the guns that are handed in?

I have always wondered what if one was handed in and it could be linked to a murder of some sort, would they then go about finding who handed it in?

Fond somewhere local, and buy a webley Exocet.
A traditional break barrel spring powered rifle, about £170 put on a cheap scope, and you have a great weapon for shooting rats, bunnies, dirty pij and anything else that is legit to shoot.

There is also the Theoben Evolution, Gas Ram, bought mine about 4 years ago with a scope for £350, second hand one should be cheap enough. really couldn't recommend one enough. Plus they're good enough to go through 300 pages of telephone directory biggrin

Gas Ram is the dogs nuts, but they're getting rare to buy brand new.

How to get rid of rats.

1x house brick.

Cover with peanut butter.

Place in middle of lawn.

Cover a 50p sized piece of cling film with a layer of red nail polish.

Take lens off maglite, place red cling film over it. Re-assemble and position in upstairs window (open) pointing at brick.

Wait till dark.

Put torch on.

Shoot rats with the cheapest .22 air rifle you can get.

Don't bother moving the rats once dead, other will continue to eat from the brick regardless of their fallen comrades.

Once done, bin bag and dispose of rats.

All really easy, fairly good fun, cheap and hassle free. It is easy to get magpie like with guns, having been into target rifle shooting since the age of eight I completely understand the need to buy the shiny, expensive carbon everything. BUT - In this instance it would be a waste of time imho.

Well put.
They are rats.
I put forward a gas ram BSA.
I wouldn't worry about the rats- just get them shot.
In view of being somewhat humane I would choose to use something near the legal limit to shoot them,
but to be honest, they are rats, I wouldn't worry too much.
Just get rid of the feckers

Then wait for armed response when a neighbour reports shooting from house window.

Seriously OP - make sure you are a good distance from any roads/houses/foot paths or you may well have the ARU pointing their guns at you.

In my case it was the back garden, overlooked by trees...

All perfectly safe and legal.

Then you're only option is really to pop smoke, lay down supressing fire and head for the treelinesmile

Seriously though, that's decent advice. I think the general rule is based around 'nuisance' which can be interpreted in many ways smile

If you're using a springer, then you won't be silent - far from it even with a moderator. Bri957's advice is good, but for maximum stealth, you'd want to shoot from well inside the room, from a comfortable position that affords max sound insulation.

Now, if you had one of Weihrauchs finest HW100's , you could sit on the lawn, content in the knowledge that that only audible sound would be the quick - EEEK of a shot rat. hehe

Armed trespass (pellets beyond your borders) and using too close to a byway are both available and likely too, in 2010.
