That explains it, I assumed it just referred to whether the firing pin hits the centre of the cartridge or the rim. Admittedly all the .22 rifles I've fired have been rim fire and all the .303s centre fire.Rim fire, by the name, is when the primer is contained within the rim of the case and the firing pin strikes the rim edge as you correctly say.
Centre-fire is when the firing pin strikes a separate primer inserted in the centre of the base of the case.
