I go out for a run three or four times per week for fitness. I am not fast and usually I jog rather than run, covering about 10k each time.

I was out a couple of nights ago when I cast an eye over my shoulder to see a "proper" runner some distance behind me wearing vest and "short" shorts. I tried not to get competitive but did run a tad faster, however a few minutes later he came past me. As he passed I was mortified to observe that he was well into his 60s, about 5 feet tall, had quite a big belly and looked for all the world like Uncle Albert off Only Fools and Horses.

I am in my early forties and quite fit I think, it was therefore inconceivable that someone looking like Father Christmas should run faster than me. So I set off after him. By this time I'd covered about 5k and was warmed up so I lengthened my stride and pressed on a bit. It must have taken me a kilometer to catch him and before I was able to overtake him I needed to turn off!

I was mortified.

Has anyone else been put to shame by the fit but portly?

Manks

Was he orange?

If so he could have been an Oompa Lumpa.

Embarrassed to admit I am one frown

I cycle over 100 miles a week, circuit train every week, play badminton once a week as well as the occasional swim, surf, kayak and run. I'm still pushing the scales at over 18st though. It does piss people off who consider themselves fit when I overtake them though. biglaugh

Afraid not, under 30 and over 6ft so I haven't even got age to blame.

A guy I used to work with had a pot belly. But he could run a marathon without breaking sweat. I could never understand it. Oh, and he was early 60s as well, but no beard.

It's all to do with training. You can train yourself, over a long time, to do pretty much anything within reason. I'm guessing this guy has been running for many years so his body is just used to it - probably started when he was thin and just grown a gut in his later years.

Nah, not ran in a long long time (even if it does help to build stamina), i prefer to cycle or swim.

I use the running as an opportunity to exercise my dog too. After several months of trying to get him on a bike I dismissed the idea because of his appalling balance. As for the swimming, it was going well until David Lloyd Leisure rumbled us when Fido took down his swim shorts and made sweet love to the lifeguard's leg.

Fair enough, man's best friend and that.

Treat him to one of these beauties then:

Would I be able to squeeze into that? How does it attach to the dog?

One of the guys I work with is like that. Beer belly, three chins, but runs 10k every weekend. I'm built like a cheap B&Q rake, and can't get out of my own way...
