(It's the same sort of argument as splitting the infinitive - some people rail about it, but most people it as being 'natural' and the 'correct' version as being unnecessarily convoluted.)
It was just a piece of nonsense invented by the Victorians anyway, using the false logic that since split infinitives aren't a feature of Latin (because a Latin infinitive is all one word) and everything Latin is the coolest thing ever (if you're Victorian) then splitting an English infinitive is really uncool and plebby. Which is just stupid.

There are very few words in common usage that I have to think how to spell. It's just one of those things I've always been very good at. Of course I get the odd one wrong on the internet every now and then, like everyone else, but that's carelessness rather than not knowing.

(to balance out the potential half-arrogance of that sentence:...
"Half-arrogance"? confused There's nothing remotely "arrogant" about saying you have no difficulty spelling properly. Anyone who is past the stage of primary school who does have difficulty spelling (and isn't actually dyslexic) is simply a thick . And there are far too many thick s around these days. I blame the "video generation" - far too few people actually read these days, instead they sit there staring at videos or TV breathing through their open mouths with a string of drool dangling from their slack lips.

I want to say this now after a good night out and I will probably read this and regret it in the morning but what the hell. Its the internet after all and keyboard warriors should lay off a bit.

My english grammar and punctuation is poor. I admit that. definitely is one of my weaker points (thank you spell check) but I come on here to read what other write, usually good advice which I respect but I get flamed for my bad english and so do many others.

I was a nob at school, I didnt further my education and went into manual work which I enjoy and I dont really have any regrets. Well maybe one big regret but that was my own silly mistake, live and learn. At the end of the day I have a car that I have dreamed of since I was a child and have a great interest in motors that I probably will never get a chance to drive or own.

Why cant people stop being pedantic and reply to the things what other ask or say without being daft. It is annoying.

I hope you understand what I am getting at and await the silly replies.

PS do I really need to make the I a capital letter when talking about myself?

You make a fair point and you're entitled to make it.

But if you find 'the replies' and the pointing out, "annoying", there are some people who will find careless grammar, punctuation and spelling equally annoying; more if they're of a pedantic persuasion.

Like you, I was a prat at school - but I took time out to analyse what was important to me. Being able to speak English in a respectable manner was about as important to me as possessing the ability to transcribe my thoughts into something legible. It didn't seem to matter much at school, but it does now.

You may get the raging hump if someone was being pedantic, but equally, I get annoyed that someone - for example - would repeatedly get there/their wrong, or continue to misuse the apostrophe.

Yeah i've bean seeing that alot too.
I've not seen that before, I'll have keep an eye out.

The ones that annoy me are the use of 'off of' as in :
"I got off of the bus"

Not you didn't "You got off the bus".

I've seen it used by intelligent people in business documents, drives me nuts (not exactly that sentence though!)

The other one is the massive use of Shirely instead of Surely and people claiming that it's some Airplane reference, when clearly they are being thick.

Obviously I know where it's from, as I said, but seriously there are times when I have seen it written where it would be very odd for someone to try and be funny in an otherwise serious or sad post.

Alot, or even worse, allot instead of a lot. Brought instead of bought. Weary instead of wary. Haitch for aitch. (Especially when someone "corrects" you for not saying "haitch")

These are a few of my favourite things!

I agree with this.

When I read through your post I noticed the grammatical errors & if someone handed me a piece of work in the office with them on I'd point them out & make them change them, but as it is you're posting on a forum where it makes no difference to the life of anyone if you make a few mistakes. I could be a smartarse & point them out but as I've already said - nobody likes a smartarse & I wouldn't like myself for being 1.

I don't buy into this whole "It really annoys me" bullst because I truly believe people only point out errors in a pathetic attempt to degrade another member and to make themselves seem smarter.

I don't like people lazily using text speak but getting a bit of spelling and/or punctuation wrong doesn't bother me. I have a million things more important than that to worry about and I think anyone who sits there wking themselves silly over abusing another forum member for something so minor is a complete and utter .

This, "It's only a forum, so it doesn't matter" attitude really pisses me off. So what if it's only a forum? It takes no more time to type properly and spell and punctuate correctly than it does to make yourself look like an illiterate mong.

The only reasons to get it wrong are (1) you are ill-educated; (2) you are thick; or (3) you are just too bloody lazy to take a little pride in how you present yourself to the world. Whichever it is, the end result is the same. You can hide behind the, "it doesn't matter" defence as much as you like but the only person you are fooling is yourself; if you use the language like an illiterate, then people will see you as an illiterate.
