When do you think the general population will wake up and realise that religion is just a few fairy tales?

I said it in the stoning by death thread the other day, but it really astounds me how people can still believe rubbish about super humans in the clouds etc.

Do you think in say, 50 years, religious people will go to mental institues?

What about 100 years?

200?

Or will religion sadly always be with us? Surely when our technology is so far advanced and we can travel to other planets etc then religious nuts will not be able to still believe it?

I genuinely believe that religion was started to make people act better back in the cavemen type days. Now we are "advanced" religion is best to be forgotten about and put down to one of the human races mistakes.

WWII's death toll was ~65 million - that wasnt because of religion, that was because of nationalism. Iv seen the photos of a catholic priest blessing a bomber, which flew over germany to bomb them, who are also catholic. Thats not a "religious war", is it?

General population of the UK or the world?

I'd say that the UK has largely ditched religion, with its strongest proponents being recent(within the last 50 years) migrants or the descendants of migrants. I'd like to think that each successive generation of migrants will pay less and less attention to their sky daddys.

As to the rest of the world, who knows.

It time for another one of these is it? It 'ill be salted popcorn for me.

I don't think religion will ever go away, one of the things that pissed me off about uni' was how thick many people (read media student) were, that some just needed to believe in something regardless of how stupid it was (spiritualism).

It's been at least 3 weeks since we had one. People need to get it out of their system. I suppose someone could just link to every argument and counter-argument via the search.

most scientists will admit we know next to nothing about the universe.

While you might struggle with the concept of religion, it's also foolish to assume all of the answers have been found.

Find me an explanation for the "cambrian explosion" for example.

Whats are you inferring? That because science can't 100% say why the cambrian explosion happened, then something like this must have happened?
