Is an example, but were many aware of simple.wikipedia.org ? A toned down, simplified English version of many articles.

I agree unit 731 is horrifying about what some people can get up to with free reign. But if people forget, we risk re-living the past.

I must start digging out my Pocket Read-me list which is full of Wikipedia articles

Didn't know about the "simple" version of Wikipedia, thanks for the heads up.

And quite right, we shouldn't forget. But sometimes knowing is enough, rather than having to see it enacted y'know?

I belong to a local history group on Facebook, and there currently is a discussion about a Bailey Bridge in the centre of Chelmsford. It prompted me to check the Wikipedia article.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bailey_bridge

Follow the link to Donald Bailey, the inventor, as well. Apparently Montgomery said we wouldn't have won the war without them, but this seems to overlook side shows like the Battle of Britain and Bletchley Park! Still, I suppose the Royal Engineers were closer to home as far as he was concerned.

Can't help thinking their inventor deserves more recognition, when you consider that Barnes Wallis is almost a household name.

He has, sort of.

There is a 'monument' opposite the old MEXE site where he worked, that is now, yep, a retail park...

I’ve been over the bailey bridge in Christchurch - will have to check if it’s been taken down - it was on a military site behind where the Bailey Bridge pub is in Christchurch

I also take it someone has posted Unit 731 somewhere? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unit_731
Friend of mine told me about a film called "Men Behind The Sun", which is about Unit 731. He told me never, ever to watch it. He never usually tells me not to watch things, so when he said never to watch it I took his advice.

For all the gore and horrible actions portrayed in that article, they're depicted in the movie. Everything.
They killed 580,000 Chinese with a biological weapon and I knew nothing about the attack or the Unit it originated from.

I also had no idea the Japanese were planning on using the weapons on the US.

And those involved got away with it because the US valued the research more and gave them immunity.

Fascinating stuff.

I have spent the past month going back through all 131 pages of this thread, reading all the Wikipedia articles. I should've been working, but I handed my notice in. So meh.

What I can tell you, is that the most fascinating read out of all of them is the Wikipedia article about Hugh Thompson Jr. The story of what he saw at the My Lai massacre is disturbing. Second to that is the 52 Hertz Whale, and 3rd the Ancient Aliens.

There's a lot, and I mean a lot, of double posts about Dyatlov Pass and the Lead Mask case.

For my contribution, it's the Stardust Fire in Dublin, and the fire at Bradford City. Two very horrific events. Like we say about Hillsborough, that every football fan should return home, every person should return home from going out and enjoying themselves.

3D printing of a new Turbo Prop engine reduces 845 components down to 11, simultaneously reducing weight and fuel consumption.

I assume that there's no issue with wear & tear and bits needing replacement in the large '11' components.
