Well I'm a convert...to the electric shaver.
I've had enough of docking about with wet shaving for the last 15 years. Ingrown hairs, shaving rash and mainly the minging feeling of being freshly shaved.
Bought a dirt cheap Braun electric single foil jobby the other day and t has been great.
2 minutes and I'm done. No cleaning up the sink after I'm done. No itchy nicks to spend 10 minutes tryin to stop bleeding. No need for an aftershave balm. And best of all it leaves me at 2 days growth if I had wet shaved. This is the length that is comfortable for me. Since I've had the thing I have shaved every day. Before I used to put off shaving until it got to about once a week when I would clip it, then shave it.
I shan't be goin back. When this £4.50 shaver breaks, I'll get a better one. Until then I'm quids in.
Good for you, but I found that I suffered in-growing hairs on my neck with my Phillishave, since I went DE no problems. I'm at the sad stage of enjoying a shave now, for me it's an art form.I've had enough of docking about with wet shaving for the last 15 years. Hi All
Been shaving with my Timor for a couple of months now - getting there but I think I want an adjustable. My lathering technique is getting there and I am actually starting to enjoy a shave. This thread made me end my affair with the cartridges. So I have a lot to thank you all for.
Now to my point of this post - currently after shaving I use the Alum block, air dry then I've been putting on a Clinique product - Post Shave Healer, just been using this because I had it. Now its coming to an end and I'm wondering what the best post shave products I should purchase.
What do you guys recommend? So far after reading this thread I'm leaning towards the Proraso Pre/Post shave cream followed by Trumper Extracts of Lime.
Cheers

Trumpers Skin Food is still the best thing I've tried.
Indeed but its expensive, I normally use the alum block and then some aftershave a few moments later, im not sure how good it is for your skin but subdues any irritation or bleeding I may have caused with the razor.Dan_1981 said:

Yep agree, it is dear but there are larger bottles available that bring the overall cost down slightly. If Trumpers is too rich for your blood, then at almost the opposite end of the price scale is Nivea Sensitive Post Shave Balm, IMO it is a very decent product indeed and available in most supermarkets/chemists etc.Craphouserat said:

Im doing a big shaving shop now I haven't ever really used anything other than palmolive and Wk soap, so what is a good soap? I have heard some good things about Mitchell's woolfat soap, and it sounds pretty nice... and most importantly what type of bowl, ceramic or wood Been shaving with my Timor for a couple of months now - getting there but I think I want an adjustable. I'm going to order the Timor razor, and when, and indeed if i have to get something more aggressive I am planning on getting something more aggressive, and keeping the Timor as a travel/hangover razor for when I dont need a great shave, but dont want to cut myself.
Im also ordering an Alum bar and a pack of styptic matches to see what they are like... I would also be interested in what post shave cream to get!
Now I'm just waiting for paypal to stop being so useless and i can get down to a proper shave!

So long as you're happy.
It'd be interesting to know how/what you were doing with the de safety razor though - an electric shave for me is a joke, even with a 'state of the art' philishave costing north of £200. My £25 Muhle does a far better job.
No downsides as far as I can see.

Didn't bother with DE. After the cut-throat shave I had at a barbers I gave up on the idea. The Wife got me the cheapy Braun and I haven't touched the Gillette stuff since. I don't like the "rubbery skin" feeling of being freshly wet shaved, I prefer the feeling of two/three days growth. Wet shaving gave me no end of ingrowing hairs The electric shaver keeps me at that all the time and it takes a fifth of the time to whizz over my face.
No downsides as far as I can see.
That's fine,so long as you're happy! No downsides as far as I can see.
So... The first time you drove; his did you do?
How about before that and someone else drove you; how did that go?
Learning to shave properly at fifty felt a bit odd, and some pride was swallowed. Worth the effort? God yes. It's a whole new skill which has improved my life. Sounds over-dramatic, maybe, but when you're properly shaved its quite liberating. Machismo too.
If you have the time and inclination it's probably worth the effort. Maybe.

The skin food isnt cheap but look on Amazon as several places sell large bottles of it. Also as it has glycerin in it a little goes a long way. I shave every other day usually and my bottle will last about 8 months.
Likewise with the Proraso cream. You dont want to put too much on as its menthol.

I have used just over half a bottle in about a year, shaving pretty much every day.
Or I have a bigger bottle. It was about £30.

I’m not the WS razor was my entry into DE shaving and still gets the odd outing. Its better in my opinion than the cheap Lord DE metal razor that you can find for about £8.
As for the Timor TTO its OK but in no way aggressive I've suggested it before as suitable and inexpensive for beginners.
The option of electric shaving doesn’t appeal to me, been there done that didn’t like it one bit, but if it works for you then knock yourself out.
The WS classic is a great mild razor. Perfect for the third pass when you want to be super super smooth. Buy cheap at Boots. As for the Timor TTO its OK but in no way aggressive I've suggested it before as suitable and inexpensive for beginners.

The Weishi is a lovely piece of precision aluminium engineering and is also very mild, however it is very sensitive to head angle and with a bit of experimenting can be quite effective. Buy cheap on eBay from China/Hong Kong.
The Edwin Jagger DE89 is your basic standard DE razor. Inexpensive, well made, not too mild or aggressive, does the job. Sometimes they are very cheap on Amazon. Otherwise its the English Shaving Company. Sometimes they fit the Barleycorn handle which is just a fantastic piece of kit.

Look at Frank Shaving brushes from China on eBay. Google for more information on them.Or get a Vulfix 404 badger/boar mix. Buy online from Diamond Edge, currently £10.20.

I use thishttp://www.amazon.co.uk/Taylor-Bond-Street-Jermyn-...
I've tried just about every soap and cream - this smells great and makes a superb lather.
As always with shaving, everyone has different tastes and needs. But the above, for me, is the best by far. 100g lasts forever and the refills are much cheaper.
Having a decent brush makes a big difference too.

The Timor is decent enough razor for a starter. My first safety razor but even after a couple of months I'm already thinking of going to an adjustable - Merkur Futur - I'm finding the Timor very mild. Tried with different blades - Gillette 7's and Derby's. Once you start this shaving you will find yourself which blade suits you - I found the Derby's harsh and never used them, had to go back when I ran out and now prefer the Derby to any other i've tried. I've not tried any cream you have mentioned - I'm still on the first one I bought - a bit steep at £17 but I find taylor of Old bond Street Jermyn collection for sensitive skin gives great protection still loads left after a few months. The alum block - I have really liked this - a little nippy at first but gives a great finish to the shave. Anyway good luck and enjoy it...I have started too Timor razor (as i need a gentle razor, and will probably get a more agressive one later)

Thanks to all who offered thoughts on my last question - a bigger bottle of extract of limes along with Proraso is the way I'm going.
Cheers
