OT but a related issue and probably not worth a new thread. Got to travel by air next week for a short european trip so hand luggage only. I assume that security is not going to be very impressed with a DE blade in my toilet bag? How about a plastic multi blade razor? Since I will need to be clean shaven on the 2nd day away, the only other option is stopping by a chemist to buy a disposable out there and then chucking it before I fly home.

You're fine with a multi blade cartridge.... so you take your soap, brush etc - but not DE blades....

Anyone try a modified Merkur Progress? I quite like the look of the Digress http://www.thegentlemansgroomroom.com/products/dig...

Technically, according to (UK) law, you're allowed what they call a "safety razor". This includes a DE razor and blades.

In practice, you'll probably get the blades taken away from you. Buy some out there.

£1.29

Reviews don't seem too bad. I've bought 4 - 3 for stocking fillers, and one for me to try. If it's lighter than my Futur, it'll go in the travel kit.
HBM - I have this looks exactly the same but ordered from DealExtreme.
It was OK for starting with but quality control a bit iffy - had to bend one of the sides straight.
Replaced with Lord DE razor from the states based on reviews - have nothing else but cheap Gillette to compare to but works fine for me. Much better build quality & QC - used for past 6mths or so.
Mine came with Shark blades & best I have tried so far so will be ordering more.

I think the key is to have a half decent aggressive razor and decent blade.
If you have a mild razor and blunt blades it is natural to press harder.

I've been experimenting recently with Shaving creams and soaps and thought I'd share what I'd found in case it's useful.

1. Men U Shaving Creme (about £2.50, 15ml tube)

I bought this in Boots, mostly because I was there buying a cheap brush for at work.

It's a menthol shaving cream, a few drops are added to the top of the brush and then lather straight onto your face (according to the tube). I have to say I'm not too keen it's a bit too menthol and gets a bit too "Stingy" by the second lathering. Creates a pretty decent lather though, and it's pretty quick if you're in a bit of a rush.

2. Boots Freshwood Brushless Shave Creme. (£1.95 125ml)

A tube of creme that is applied straight to the face, no massaging in or lathering needed.
Smells quite nice, sort of Sandalwood, but not quite. Another one I'm not keen on, doesn't feel right and I didn't find it as good as proper lather, but again it's quick, if slightly wasteful as you need quite a lot each time.

3. Arko Shave Stick (Seemingly anywhere from about 60p on Ebay to £4.50 at my local barbers. Guess where I bought it rolleyes)

This is a shave stick, just like the Palmolive one, used the same way whether that's rubbed on the face and then lathered, or smooshed down into a bowl or whatever.

And it's fantastic, smells really nice and produces tons of lather, way more than you'd think, and all without much effort, I didn't have to add any extra water other than what was in the brush after soaking (and shaking almost dry), though I did add more, just to see how far the lather could be pushed till it was just bubbles, it took quite a lot.

If you can get it at the 60p end of the scale, definitely do it, I'm seriously tempted to try some of their other products.

Without me going through the whole thread again. For £40ish what is the best razor I can get? I use Feather blades. Cheers.

Merkur 34C or Muhle R89/Jagger DE89 are probably your best middle-of-the-road new options. New razors are made from plated zamak unless otherwise stated. If the plating is compromised in any way the razor will quickly rot from the inside out. New razors are relatively cheap though, and my DE89 should last at least 5 or 6 years & only cost me £20.

For less than £40 you should also be able to get most vintage Gillettes like Techs, Slim adjustables, open combs. It all depends on what sort of shave you want & how dense your beard is.
Ironically ebay often isn't that good for vintage razors, often they're well over-priced. You're far better off joining a forum like
http://www.theshavingroom.co.uk/forum/
and putting in a wanted request in the B/S/T section or simply buying one for sale there. You can get a vgc+ mid 1960's slim adjustable for your budget & it will last a lifetime. If you don't like it you can always flog it on ebay for a small profit wink

Thanks for that. I have a thick beard and have been using a Wilkinson classic razor for years. It's good, but it's about time I got a proper one. Feather blades are great.

Mühle R89 and equivalent/similar is a great beginners razor, though once you have some experience it's relatively mild. Great for use with a sharp blade like feather or personna/Israeli reds. Once I'd gained a year or sos experience I switched to a more aggressive head recommended above a while ago. I'll try to find a link later. The aggressive head with a more gentle blade like Gillette 7 o'clock sharp edge gives me the best, most consistent shave yet.
I'm sure it varies for everyone, but once you find a winning combination it's like night and day. Worth experimenting.
Braveheart head.

I've had blades taken from my hand luggage at Heathrow. Which is why I mentioned it.

Slowly getting there! No cuts & slightly less rash today smile Still amazed by how closer shave I get off this vs a 5 blade Gillette!!! I'm converted anyway smile

I used more cream & kept adding cream after each stroke, shorter strokes, and no pressure just used the weight of the blade. Took a while but worth it.
I've let it grow 3 days though as the rash was pretty bad, next weeks a challenge! Need to shave everyday for work. Paydays around the corner so I'll be asking for help on a decent brush & what pre & after shave oils/lotions you recommend to cut down & sooth any rash smile

Purshaced and read Leisure guys guide to Gourmet shaving, good info about processes but doesn't recommend specific products, just says try lots and go with what works for you.

Avoid against the grain if you are having any discomfort, go with and then across the grain if you need two passes.
