Does anyone want my old razor? (I think it's this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B06Y3ZWNWK/ref=sspa_dk...

I don't use it any-more and sure someone could benefit. I have a ton of varying blades too, so can throw them in, as well as a brush (although, used?!) and some foam and a little stand.
Hello,

Just looking at this razor and what with it being adjustable but if you wanted to trim from say 5mm to 1mm, is this the razor to do it or would you need something else?

Thanks

Sorry, skim read the message.

This is for a shave, as you've said, something electric to trim hair, but keep some. (what I do now, much easier!)

To trim a beard to a decent uniform length (or go fancy with blending...) a Phillips oneblade is actually pretty good. I ended up buying one in Sainsbury's to trim the edges of my beard, and use it to trim the beard itself too.

My supply of Wizamet Super Iridium blades (the original Russian ones) has been depleted. I am having issues trying to track down some, some people are asking $2 per blade!

Anyone have any links where they sell them?

Has anyone tried the new Philips one blade yet? Looks on the surface like a decent grooming product.

Yes, I have one.

It's not a shaver - in that it won't give you a close shave. However, it's quite useful to hack off maybe 3 or 4 days growth before having a closer shave with a razor.

If you wanted a permanent close stubble, it would be good for that I should think. Not sure about 'grooming' in general as I don't do this - only shave. smile

ETA - it is very smooth to use - doesn't catch at all. Ever.

Been DE shaving three months now, no cause to go back to cartridges. Enjoying the ritual.

The first couple of shaves the skin on my face looked like E.T. at the end of the film when he’s dying and desperately needs to go home. The combination of poor technique plus Alum block was badly drying out my skin but this went away from the third shave. Moisturisers give me spots so I use Aloe Vera gel.

Used up the freebies- bluebeard’s revenge cream and blades. Both were fine, the blades were absolutely fine for one shave but pulled noticeably if used a second time.

Went to Poraso white soap which seems to lack a little lubricity but that might be my lathering technique.

Using the last of the Feather blades now which are good but would like to try some alternatives- suggestions?

It varies massively from person to person, but after about 6 years of DE shaving, my favourite blades are:
Personna Platinum Chrome
Polsilver Super Iridium
Feather Super Stainless
Gillette 7 o'clock Black
Gillette Silver Blue
Personna Super (Lab Blue)

After being inspired by this thread - and some other reading - I'm making the switch from Cornerstone and I've ordered a starter kit from Shave Lounge and am excited to get started. Was drawn to this as the blades are a variety of packs so I can try them out and see what I prefer. Plus, it's not putting a dent in my wallet if I decide it's not for me. I'll update you on my first shave once it arrives!

I've been using Feathers for years, but the most recent batch I bought haven't been as good. They don't feel nearly as sharp, and have been quite uncomfortable to use. I've switched to Astras, which are working much better for me.

I don't know whether I just got a dud batch of feathers, or something else has changed. Odd.

So, I had my first shave using Astra blades for no other reason that they were top of the sample pack (actually... Feathers were. But after all I've read I decided they probably weren't the best thing to start this journey with!).

Whilst it took me more passes than expected - I think this is down to not having my technique down yet. That beng said, I loved the - for lack of a better term - 'ritual' or process of it. Taking more time than I would with a quick cartridge job meant I ended up with a better end product.

Previously, I've suffered irritation under my bottom lip when shaving - meaning I've perhaps done it every third day or so, rather than every day which I'd prefer due to wanting a smooth face. Pleased to say that this was a big improvement, and am hopeful over time it'll go completely using my new set-up. If anyone has any tips on dealing with this issue specifically I'm all ears. Is Alum Block the way to go?

The DE89 is a beautiful thing and feels just right in the hand and I managed the process nick free - which I'm very much putting down to beginners luck.

Early days, but I think I'm on my way to being a convert.

Two things:
1. Durability of modern de safety razors
2. First shave with shavette

1. That's the third or forth razor that's stripped thread. I may concede that the first may've been me over-tightening, though I really don't think so. Two murkurs, an EJ89 and another - all knackered in a year or so. They seem to be made from cheese, or at best some cheap cast alloy. I have a braveheart stainless steel razor which is still in great condition with no sign of wear, but is a tad too aggressive for everyday use. Are there any well made, high quality razors similar to EJ89 which lasts?

2. First attempt with parker shavette tonight. Right cheek pretty good, left cheek okay, the rest... not so much. I know practice makes perfect but I really struggled to keep a consistent angle, especially with my left hand. No nicks, but apart from my cheeks not a great shave. ATG was shaky and bottled XTG. Tidied up and finished with de safety razor.

I've been using my Merkur Futur daily for 10 years now. The plating is starting to flake off inside the head where the blade sits, but otherwise it's fine.

Crumbs, the post above made me realise that I’ve been DE shaving for 7 years now thanks to this thread.

As I was getting close to it being cost effective I’ve ordered a Rockwell 6S to put it back into hobby territory.

Snap. I got married 7 years ago yesterday and started using a DE on honeymoon. Not been back once to a multi blade.

On the durability question above my Futur is still fine, but I have been using a 1960 fatboy for at least the last five years daily. No durability problems with it. smile
