Crumbs, the post above made me realise that I’ve been DE shaving for 7 years now thanks to this thread.

As I was getting close to it being cost effective I’ve ordered a Rockwell 6S to put it back into hobby territory.
I have a 6S. Really great razor.

It's the number that's showing on the plate (underneath) when the razor is assembled that is the size of the gap. There are no instructions and this wasn't clear.

Help please.

Ive beeen using a basic Wilkinson DE razor for 6 or 7 years. (Prompted by this thread!)

I’d like to make the step to a better quality razor, can someone give me a heads up on a good razor o move to.

I like the Astra blade, also the Gillette blue from France that seems much better than the UK version for some reason.

Happy to spend £50 or so.

Is there a difference in heads, i.e.one more violent than another etc

I’d like a close shave but not to strip my face off

Open comb tend to be more aggressive. Someone will be on shortly to recommend the really nice one I can't remember the name of (futura?) that's fully adjustable...

Otherwise, most decent shave outlets will give some indication within the item description. To be honest, what you're after is pretty much described as 'typical' so you shouldn't have to worry too much.

I did see the Merker futur. Wasn’t sure how adjustable would work but happy to try one.

The Futur is a nice bit of kit but it is a bit big and clumsy, quite hard to shave under the edge of your hooter, but the adjustability is good if you're new to DE razors.

Brave heart razor from executive shaving. Slightly more aggressive than most but great weight and a lovely turned stainless handle with excellent knurled grip.

The adjustability is rather illusory IMHO in that anything over 1 and a bit is seriously aggressive. Couldn't get on with mine so sold it. If you're tempted I'd look out a Chinese looky-likey at a fraction of the price. Or just get an EJ 89 which is silly value and suits most.

Maybe the tolerances are different for each Futur. I've had mine for years on 2.5

I don't find that at all. The difference is noticable in my experience.

It is a bit on the chunky side, and the handle is quite short, but I like mine, and other than when I'm at the gym (I have another razor in my gym bag) I've used my Futur for every shave for the last 4 years ish.

It's a bit hefty, but it helps keep things smooth.
The difference between what and what?

I have a Futur and found the difference between settings to be quite noticeable. But, as above, it's quite a large and heavy object.

I am currently using this adjustable as my daily and really like it:

2 and 4?

1 and 6?

I usually leave it on 2, but if I've been cleaning it or for some other reason accidentally turn the handle, I can tell pretty much immediately, that it feels different.
I don't think Bonefish was suggesting there isn't any difference between the settings, but that any settings above about 1.5 are too aggressive for normal use, so in effect there isn't any point adjusting it.

I never adjust mine (stays on 1.5, and has done for the past decade) so it might as well not be adjustable at all.

Newbie alert.

Recently adopted a bald head and already wish I was balder so i didnt have to shave it every 2/3 days.

Started with the phillips one blade which is good and keep as a backup and impossible to cut yourself with but still leaves a horseshoe stubble and at £10 a blade which do not last the quoted 4 months and certainly not doing a whole head.

Got a good price on some wilkinson super million blade whatevers and handle, Gets a nice clean shave but some areas require several passes and cuts mainly due to this. Blades also seem to dull after 3/4 shaves.

Was looking at DE razors, due to price as onces these wilkinsons are good they look expensive to replace and I only seem to cut due to having to do multiple passes as they just dont cut enough.

Does anyone else shave their head with them? Whats the reccomended go to first timers for handles and blades. Seen feathers mentioned a few times. Would these be too sharp for the scalp?

Is there a 'starters' or 'newbies' kit that would be recommended? I've decided I'm going to try going down this route thumbup

EJ89 razor + Personna or Feathers blades (try them in that order) + Poraso soap in a dish + bristle brush of your choosing to start.

Only the latter might be a candidate for upgrading.

Or there are blade packages, starter packages etc, but tbh I'd go straight for the above.

I always loved the smell of Proraso blue, I've moved away from DE, or even shaving at all!

But I love the smell, has anyone tried the cologne, and is it similar to Proraso blue?

I haven't been through the whole thread but IMHO the older razors are much better made than the modern ones.

I went through a phrase of collecting old razors and may have, erm, one or two (ahem) and one of my favourites (and the one I use day to day) is a Gillette New Type.

They're available pretty cheaply and really give an excellent shave.

The two at the front in the image below are 'New' Types. Don't get an 'Old' Type (the one at the back) unless you like seeing your claret.

Those open combs look savage.
