Is there a 'starters' or 'newbies' kit that would be recommended? I've decided I'm going to try going down this route

EJ89 razor + Personna or Feathers blades (try them in that order) + Poraso soap in a dish + bristle brush of your choosing to start.
This is what I did as per Bonefish Blues’ instructions, haven’t looked back nor spent any money other than blades since. It’s taken quite a while to get up to speed but it doesn’t take me long to shave now and cuts / nicks have never been a problem really. I bought a shaving set from https://www.edwinjagger.co.uk/ and its been great and I can't fault the customer service. My 2.5 year old shaver broke a month ago and I sent it back and they replaced it free of charge.
So three months into the EJ http://amzn.eu/d/7T76RQ3 and i dont like it.
Currently using either Gillette blue or Astra blades but i dont seem to have a nice clean shave without multiple passes.
What would the next step be, I appreciate the the EJ isnt aggressive (in fact not a single drop of claret whereas old cheap razor was like a bloodbath at times) so i'd like something a little closer.
Also, anyone understand the Merkur ratings?

I would try either Feather, Gilette 7 O'Clock Sharp or Personna Platinum razor blades and see if that makes any difference. Currently using either Gillette blue or Astra blades but i dont seem to have a nice clean shave without multiple passes.

If by ratings you mean the Merkur razor settings, then 1 is very mild and 6 (or is it 7) is very aggressive.

Executive shaving braveheart - excellent close shave. If that's not close enough for you, try R41 - big balls required.

Very good razor - should get you close enough. Also try some Feather blades.

Come on, this is PH!
Buy a straight razor, learn how to use it (plenty of vids on Youtube) and you'll never look back...

I bought a plastic Wilkinson Sword DE razor and some blades from boots. Be careful though before you know it you’ll have a nice Merkur, stand, brushes, dish and enough soap and stuff to start your own shopI've been trying some UK artisan shaving soaps.
I have to say, so far I've been extremely lucky.
I've tried
Obsessive Soap Perfectionist Barbershop & also their Orange & Patchouli
Phoenix & Beau Sanskrit & also Trafalgar.
These are giving me the best DE shaves I've had. All the soaps are tallow-based, they're all really slick and they leave my face feeling very soft after the shave in comparison to mass production creams & soaps.
I highly recommend putting some of these soaps on your Christmas lists if you're struggling for ideas.
All are about £15 delivered, from places like Connaught Shaving or The English Shaving Company.
