What should I budget for getting properly sorted and "shave ready"? Assume I'd then need a strop?
Not a lot - contact Neil at www.strop-shop.co.uk - I have a Dovo straight, and he honed it to be "shave ready", and threw in a strop as well.
TBH, you can strop a straight razor on your jeans - once it has been properly honed, you are just knocking the rough edges off.

Anyone got any experience of this?

Thinking of giving one a go, madness or not?

Not at all madness. I used one for a couple of years. Closer shave than the Gillette type things. Cheaper for blades as well!

The only reason I stopped using it was that I grew a beard... I now use a cut throat razor for the sides as its easier.

Thinking of adding it to my Merkur.
The other half bought a bamboo razor for her legs & I gave it a whirl. Actually shaved better than the Merkur so am now investigating alternatives.

We were chatting about them earlier thread - Chinese copies, but haven't seen a review. Silly cheap, so not an issue for anyone who wanted to try a Futur (didn't get on with mine)

Ditto, the Futur had a lot of rave reviews, but my Edwin Jagger is the one I keep coming back to https://www.amazon.co.uk/Edwin-Jagger-Detail-Chrom...

I have a couple of Futur's. I have a couple of most things actually. smile

They're nice razors but ultimately a bit too unwieldy. I haven't used mine for a year or so, I might give it a whirl.

...is exactly where I went, too, coincidentally.

Great design artifact, not the best razor for most IMHO.

R41 for the win. Short of an open blade I've found nothing shaves closer.

Just ordered a second Futur clone 7 pounds from ebay. They do a great job combined with feather blades. The quality of my first is excellent.
I tried the persona blades recommended elsewhere, didn`t find them quite as good.

I guess this is the main thread ?

So what multi-blade razors are PHers buying right now? Preferably ones that aren’t overly expensive.

Don’t really want to restart a discussion on single-blade jobbies! Isn’t there a separate thread for that?

I've got a few razors - mainly single (i know, i know) with my Merkur Futur the clear favourite, however for Christmas I received a Harrys membership and their multi blade is very, very good.

I tend to normally stay away from multiblades especially Gillette as they cut so close (technically below the skin) that the rash and accompanying pain the following day is simply not worth it.

By all accounts it's a beast.
I struggle with OC razors. One pass with a Souplex or Gillette Old Type is plenty for me, even using a shallow angle.

Got a Harrys shaving set for my birthday, the shaving gel is decent but the razor is rubbish unless tearing chunks of flesh out of your face is your thing

Not multi-bladed but seems like the thread to ask smile

I bought a shavette style straight razor that takes normal blades snapped in half.

I just had a go with some normal shaving foam but it feels like I'm still lacking some lubrication. I managed to it all without a single cut which I'm happy with but I'm wondering do I need some proper soap and a brush? If so can anyone recommend anything reasonable?

Edit: After some research, this oil seems very popular

bumping this thread. almost exactly 2 years ago I bought the 20x pack of double bladed Cien razors from LIDL for £4. they work well. i might get 1-2 shaves out of them before i decide they're too dull and throw away. (bear in mind it might be 1-2weeks before i decide to use the blade again).

however LIDL no longer sell these packs anymore. can anyone recommend any alternatives of similar value? I probably shave maybe 1-2 times a month at the most. mainly do it just because i feel like it. every other instance i just do a 0 with my trimmer.
