bumping this thread. almost exactly 2 years ago I bought the 20x pack of double bladed Cien razors from LIDL for £4. they work well. i might get 1-2 shaves out of them before i decide they're too dull and throw away. (bear in mind it might be 1-2weeks before i decide to use the blade again).

however LIDL no longer sell these packs anymore. can anyone recommend any alternatives of similar value? I probably shave maybe 1-2 times a month at the most. mainly do it just because i feel like it. every other instance i just do a 0 with my trimmer.
I wouldnt try the 5 blade razor from Lidl, they are just bad.

Do yourself a favour and get into Double Edge shaving. There is a starter razor called the Wilkinson Classic which is £5 including 5 blades, the shaving expeience is so much better.

I would have a look at some Youtube vids on how to do DE shaving.

I would be amazed if you regretted the change.

I have looked into DE shaving, mainly from this thread. Although I get the impression it would take significantly longer to shave than normal razors, no?

It doesn't need to, it just depends on the results you want to acheive really. I've done a DE shave in a shade over 4 minutes but it was patchy and hurt a fair bit. Taking the time to prepare properly and it takes me about 10 minutes but then my beard hair is like wire it's so coarse.

It's mindful zen time.
10 minutes spent having a relaxing shave using a nice razor, brush & soap is time very well spent imo.

i tend to do it on evenings, or if i have plenty of time to get ready for going out. i never do it in the mornings as i am in a rush. but i do agree. many of the times i have a shave is exactly cos of this.

The black Wilkinson razor is readily available at under £5, even Sainsburys. Very mild DE shaver, good for beginners.

Aside from the pleasure of using more traditional shaving kit (brush, soap, razor) I would say it's only fractionally longer than using a plastic cartridge razor. The reason it takes longer is that you have to take a little more care as the tools are sharper - that's the only reason to be honest.

Once you find the right razor and blades for you (and that can be a bit hit and miss) then it's quick, satisfying and easy. Cheaper too - not that that makes a massive difference.

There is a certain grace in enjoying the time it takes to do something very well and with style.

In motoring terms it is similar to enjoying the journey at least as much as the destination.

Boy child is becoming man child...

Thinking of getting him a DE razor set for Christmas - might as well start him off proper.

I bought my heavy EJ years ago, and want something similar quality, but a bit smaller/lighter for 13 year old hands/face. He doesn't need anything in any way aggressive!

Any thoughts?

Cornerstone had an offer on their “gold handle” reduced from £50 to £20.
Probably still £15 too much but they do look nice with your initials on them.

These are well made - and adjustable.

He will need a few lessons to make sure he doesn't end up shredding himself!

Thanks both!

He'll get one on one lessons from me - he's picked up penknife safety really well whilst camping, so sure he'll do fine.

Styptic pencil will be at the ready though!

I'd still be starting him on a very mild twin blade, I think. Never mind the pencil, Paramedic I'd suggest hehe

Right then, update.

Bought the wilkinson classic today, used it just now. Felt very good and seemed to give a nice close shave, it wasn't has hard to use as i thought, but it was a little hard to tell if it was cutting as it seemed to glide so smoothly, I didn't want to press down too hard. The next few days ill see what reaction it's done to my skin. I can feel a very mild burn right now. But i get this sometimes.

There are some good you tube vids on how to do it properly but basically, very hot wash of your face and next. Plenty of lather, you are probably using up any existing aerosol shaving gel, but the shaving creams work much better, shave gently, stretching your skin as you go, rinse well and then a cold water rinse. Rinse the razor as you shave so that the soap build up is washed away.

There are much more expensive and more aggressive razors out there but the Wilkinson works well. You should get around 8 shaves out of each blade.

I dont want to come over all Greta but its also great for the environment. The razor will last 100 years, the stainless steel blades are recyclable, the aerosol gels that many people use with cartridge razors is nowhere near as good as shave sticks or the specialist soaps, there is next to no plastic or metal waste.

I do follow the proper methods (hot flannel to open pores, lather well, cold afterwards etc). ive just not used a DE.

and yes.. i do use shaving foam.. sometimes i use regular soap. but this is cos i don't shave often (once a month maybe). so i don't want to splash out on expensive shaving creams etc.. i think soap works well for me, shaving gel doesnt. I'm not using expensive post-shaving balms/lotions either, I've come to know which of my body lotions absorb well into my face after shaving and cause the least/no irritation.

if there's a cheap gel/cream i can buy in the supermarkets i may consider it. but its not really that important to me.

You can buy shaving soap in Boots but i prefer Woolfat soap, i find it just gives me a better shave and smells pretty nice too

Anybody daft enough to buy one of those heated Gillette razors for £200 that uses the £10 blades?. Somebody on PistonHeads would surely. I like the idea and if it were half the price I would buy it out of curiosity but at full retail not even I can waste that much cash

Probably the wrong thread, but at what point does being a scruffy oik become a proper beard?

I'm not a young man but never grown a full set before, though I've kept the odd goatee in the past. I've not shaved my face since Christmas and still feel like a scruffy so-and-so. After two months I'd hoped it would start behaving, but I get lots of stray hairs no matter what I do. Tried combing, brushing, even beard oil and balm.
Is it just something one has to go through and it'll sort itself out when it gets some length, or is everyone's as bad and it's just I've not noticed because I've never looked closely at another man's beard?
I'm running out of patience but will give it another month, just to be sure.
