Depends on how you normally pronounce patent in your part of the world
I was once told it depends on whether you mean invention protection or the shiny leather. Former is short "a" and latter is long "a".

It's the same word; why would you pronounce it differently in respect of leather rather than any other patent?

Content and content are the same word, but you don't pronounce them the same, also desert and desert.
Content and content are homophones, but not the same word. One is a noun and the other an adjective, similarly desert and desert except in this case one is a noun and the other a verb: not the same word at all.
Patent leather is called patent leather because it's leather prepared by a patented process.

I've always pronounced patent to rhyme with patient regardless of whether it's leather or protection. However I notice the denizens of Dragons Den always pronounce it the other way.

No, they aren't. Content the noun has the stress on the first syllable. Content the adjective has it on the second.

No wonder it’s called BT Infinity when it’s only recommended by 9 out 10,000,000 people.
I like this a lot and have stolen it for Facebook and Twitter.

Our HR dept did a study into absenteeism.

Management were shocked to discover that 40% of absences were either on a Friday or a Monday.
