Resonated.

My eldest is currently looking at doing astrophysics at uni. On a recent university visit we looked at the astrophysics section in the university library - it contained only a small collection but did include a copy of nostrodamus and several books on casting horoscopes.

That's York off the list.
Are you sure that a low paid shelf stacker hadn't got astrology and astronomy mixed up?
Personally I assumed that was the point he was making.
Can't trust the librarian then who can you trust?

I mourn the passing of public libraries, in fact I go all Dewey eyed.

Those were the days, I first DEC was a PDP11 (forgot all about that). Before that a gigantic mainframe and punch cards. Mainframe probably as powerful as my IPad! But yes always a mistake on one of the cards, Manually self punch a replacement card and another day’s wait to re-run (then find another mistake!)
No probably about it. Pretty sure the ipad is dramatically more powerful than that mainframe.

It’s a terrible way to choose a university.

She wasn't keen anyway - current preferences are oxford and st andrews.

But the fact that the university library not only has actually bought books on casting horoscopes and such crap but then puts them in the astrophysics section is not reasuring. Yeah I'm sure the dept has its own library and there is a whole internet of stuff. But when her bookcase at home contains more up to date and relevant stuff than the university library it isnt great.

Have a closer look at that list.

188 books.

Alter it to show things published in the last 10 years
20 books.

Look at the actual titles.

There is a stronger case for not selecting York. While a lovely city to be a student in, and having some very good departments, their rampant expansion and multi campus model has removed a lot of the intimacy that the former York had, particularly impacting the inter-college experience... as I understand it...
