I've got a crown on my front top tooth.

The other day I woke up and it felt like I'd hit it on something. Skip two days and it's just awful pain.

Been to the dentist today, he has done an X-ray and says the nerve might had died. Given me antibiotics and said to come back in a week.

Anyone else had this? He said if the pills don't work then he will need to do root canal? Sounds awful.

Root canal....the most amzing procedure ever. I went from tear inducing pain to totally pain free in abut a hour. procedure was pain free, don;t know what all the fuss on root canals is about

Root canals are no worse than getting a filling usually. The only downside is that they're more expensive than a filling!

What happens?

I assume this falls into the £200 Nhs bracket?

You MAY need the root canal regardless of whether the tablets work, depending on whether the tooth is vital (alive) or whether there are any signs of infection evident on the x-ray.

It may be acceptable to wait until the next time you have problems to do the treatment, if you do not want it done now.

The treatment itself is usually painless, after the anaesthetic has been administered. There are occasional cases where antibiotics may need to be prescribed and treatment carried out another time, if the anaesthetic is not effective.

Root canal falls into Band 2 - £47. Crown that may need to placed on top will be Band 3 - £204.

If all done on one course of treatment, Band 3 charge will apply.

Not on the NHS. Ridiculous as that is.

shout VITALITY TEST!

Sorry biggrin

More of a comment to the other tooth pullers really but did your dentist put anything cold on your tooth to see if it was still alive? Even with the crown on you should be able to feel the cold.

He did, I could feel it but not anything like as clear as the normal tooth next to
It. How alert should the tooth be through a crown?

It wouldn't be as sensitive as the uncrowned tooth next to it due to the crown cement but it is interesting that
you did feel something. Certainly as said above it's always worth waiting and seeing what happens although I would tend to be pessimistic. The nerve could be "half dead" giving reduced sensitivity and die off completely later on and need root treatment.

The fact that the tooth has not been root treated yet though is good news: you've got much more chance of a positive outcome than if you had a previous treatment that failed (unless it was awful).

Why has he given me pills then?

Is there a way this can end without the drill?

I have the impression I've confused you redface

He has given you pills (antibiotics)because he belives the tooth is infected and this is the best way to get you comfortable in the short term. The fact that you can feel some cold in the tooth doesn't mean that it can't be infected. As I said above it could be "half dead" and infected.

Another possibility is that you have an infection in the gum around the tooth and not in the tooth itself. This would show up on radiographs and by probing around the gum. By the sound of it though this is not the case.

Only time will tell if you're going to need a drill to sort you out but as I said I would remain pessimistic, that way you either get what you expect or maybe a pleasant surprise. smile

There is a swelling at the top of the gum, hmm. I hope the pills kick in soon, I'm very irritable and the constant pain is annoying.

Do most people go to work with this issue?

The antibiotics will start to work 12-24 hours after you start them if that helps. Only you can decide about work but normally it's ok, depending what the job is of course.

Ok, I was in such a state a minute ago I went to get some orajel, seems to be doing what I need.

Will the pain become less with the antibiotic course? I really hope so.

I didn't go to work today but with this stuff tomorrow should be fine.

I feel for all people that have had to endure this. Its fuxking awful.
