Complete farce.

NO painkillers are helping now, they are doing nothing, nothing at all. Ice is my only freind.

Going to ring them first thing.

What happens with the root removal? Do they just leave a hole till next time?

As said before, get a different antibiotic.

Root will be dressed and sealed. It won't be an open hole (in most cases).

Why has he given me this one if it's not going to work and the common ones do? Makes little sense. And what do I say?

"I've posted on a forum and they say I should have so and so Ab"?

Don't worry about it. Every dentist (and every other medical practitioner) has prescribed an antibiotic, had it not work and have to change it to another one. Just go in and say the AB doesn't seem to be doing anything and he should put 2 and 2 together and do the necessary re ABs and/or nerve.

Ok.

Annoying that the strongest painkillers out there seem to be crap.

Work have an on site dentist that I forgot about but I would imagine it's not
Nhs.

dont think tgeres a legal painkiller strong enough for a dental abscess. Morphine only just took the pain fro my kidney stone...which is number 1 on pain list..number 2 is your problem!

So the pain has subsided, still hurts but a lot less. But my top lip is now very swollen and it feels like I've got a huge face.

Is this a sign that the pills are working or is swelling a bad sign?

Swelling getting worse is a bad sign.

Have you got a different or additional antibiotic yet ?

Ok, that's bad news.

I'm booked in to see dentist in 45 mins, will hopefully get them to get the drill out, at the very least change AB.

Well, he said the anti biotics are fine, and as the pain has gone but the swelling has increased, he said that is normal he's given me some anti inflamtorys, and I'm in for rct on monday

get the nerve out ASAP...its clearly an abscess and needs draining..antibiotics of limited use IMHO.

I did ask what point there was in waiting, he said it needs to be clear of
Infection before they begin.

Sadly this is one of those situations where you can't do a lot, as forum advice is not going to be adhered to by them, even if it is from other dentists!

if its as swollen as you say then to ope and drain requires no local anaesthetic..so infectio gone is not essential. Latest guidelines state that 1st line of treatment for abscess should be drainage..not antibiotics!

Interestingly the swelling has started coming down already. As said, I'm at their mercy really

So what stage do we think I'm at then?

Currently, tooth has little to no feeling and has no pain, I have a swelling right at the top of my gum, which in turn has made my face swell, I've got some pills to bring that down which are working and 3 days of AB's left.

monday they have booked me in for the RCT treatment, is it me or is it still unclear as to what the issue is?

It still could be the gum? Is the tooth dead now?

It feels AMAZING not being in pain.

Almost certainly the tooth, radoigraphs will confirm and that being the case RCT is the right way forward.

Not necessarily to begin with. But there will most likely be another one or two taken during the process of completing the root canal.
