Evening all,

After experiencing a slight tenderness and quite a bit of pain just inside the crease of my bottom I visited the doctors on Wednesday. Unfortunately I couldn't get to see my doctor but got seen by the nurse practitioner. I was diagnosed as having a Pilonidal Cyst, or nicknamed "Jeep Seat". I will let you Google it if you want but be warned, any photographs that come up aren't pleasant (and fortunately for me mine just looks red and swollen). She has prescribed me a weeks course of antibiotics as she said this "should" clear it up. If it gets worse, or I start to feel ill (on top of my already bad cold) I should go right back.
Anyhow, I went back to work that afternoon but after my 9 hour shift I took it upon myself to tell my manager I wasn't going to be in the next day etc. As I drive for a living, and have quite a hairy derrière I must say! It wasn't helping the situation and because of the amount of pain getting in/out of my van, lifting heavy loads and just even sitting in the van I had to stop.

This morning I woke to knowing it was still there but the lumps had gone down a lot and there was only a small small bit of pain. However as today has progressed, I have been using my laptop to catchup on work outside of work and watching good(bad) old day time telly, my backside has gone back to it's previous state. As I can't leave anything alone, I decided to Google the diagnosis and it turns out, most pieces I have read say antibiotics will not make a blind bit of difference. All the sources I have read are indeed medical based and I wondering if I should sit it out (no pun intended) and let the antibiotics run their course, going back to work on Monday or try and book another appointment in the morning with a Doctor?

I have digressed quite a bit above so I will put it into a question;

Will antibiotics work/not work (Nurse Practitioner VS The Internet) and should I run the course of the antibiotics or book in an appointment in the morning?

I had an anal fistula a few months ago which was agony. I am under a gastro consultant for crohns disease and he started me on stronger medication for crohns after trying antibiotics etc. I had a search on the internet about it and nearly all said thats antibiotics won't help and that they nearly always need operating on. My consultant told me to ignore this and that the new medication for my crohns disease would sort it. He was right and not one web page mentioned anything other than surgery as a fix.

I know its not the same thing but it just goes to show that the internet is useless on most things medical.

Definitely stick with the antibiotic.

You basically have a little track that leads from deep under the skin to the outside environment. This track was suppose to disappear when you are born. But for some people like youself, it did not disappear.

Sometimes this tract gets blocked and becomes infected and that's whats happening with you. Since it's an infection, antibiotics will definitely help.

That said, anti-biotics is not going to make this track go away, and for some people, the tendency for this tract to block up and get infected is greater than others. (Possibly related to profession ie. those who are sitting down alot) If you do find you get alot of reoccurence and it's really troubling you then you can go to your gp and request them to refer you to the surgeons to have this track removed.

Beware though, these tracks do go quite deep under the skin and you will have a large chunk of tissue removed for what seems like a minor skin problem.

  • Depending on the size the cyst can sometimes be drained, if the current episode is particularly concerning you it might be worth going back to your GP and get a second opinion from a doctor this time?

Had the op twice about 15 years ago. Absolute hell beforehand but OK now. I too had antibiotics and didnt make the slightest difference. God luck OP. The 'daily packing' is interesting!

I had one a few years ago.
Put up with it until it exploded when i was running.
Quite a shock...

All i can remember is that the packing hurt like a bh..
best of luck.
Not a great thing to experience.

The nurse popped in every day to repack etc. It was like the magicians trick, as metre after metre was pulled out....Nice

Not to be a miserable bd, but keep an eye on it. I had one that would swell up and then subside, this went on for a good 12 months. Eventually it got nasty and I had to have it excised, not the best 6 weeks ever if I'm honest, especially with an infection and split stitches.

Still, hope everything stays quiet for you mate.

I was on course after course of antibiotics, after 2.5 years I had the bd cut out

it's an ingrowing hair - antibiotics won't do anything for them
