I was admitted to Hospital in Tenerife whilst on holiday in December 2009. I arrived home today to find a letter from a company called Eventus requesting full payment of the costs (£600). This came as quite a shock! I was not informed during my stay (2 days) that anything was payable - they discharged me without informing me this.

I had assumed that my EHIC card would cover the costs. I "think" I had travel insurance for this trip, but my concern is that if EHIC doesn't cover the costs that my insurance company would not pay out due to this being almost 2 years ago.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Nice solution, but out of the question unfortunately - I have only just moved into this house. God knows how they have traced me because the address on the invoice is where I lived about 5 years ago (which I suspect they took from my driving license as they sifted through my wallet whilst unconscious). They have probably being trying to trace me for 2 years.

Got a few options...

1. You have just received free Fuel (If you have a fireplace)

2. Give it to a cat - cats like envelopes and such wink

3. Recycle - Its good for the environment.

4. Dont go back to Tenerife
4a. Stay out of hospital if you do go wink

But in all seriousness I wouldnt get too distressed by it. Assuming it didnt come recorded delivery - you never received anything !

If you were in a state hospital you were covered. It has happened though that people have been taken to a private hospital and not realized..even then though

your medical insurance should cover it.

I don't know if the hospital was private - I was found unconscious and therefore taken to whatever hospital they wanted. If it was a private hospital then I wouldn't have liked to see a state one - I was left on a trolley in a corridor for the whole morning until they moved me into a ward.

Seems a bit odd.Why wait 2 years before billing you? I'm sure a private hospital would have been on your case a lot quicker than that. Who is this Eventus ?

Is it this? http://uk.linkedin.com/pub/peter-clynes/a/376/620 looks like they specialise in medical insurance debt collecting. They also appear to be UK based

I can only find one other example, from 2007 http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.php...

I thought the EU health card covered spanish hospitals, but I spent a night in hospital after an accident at cartagena and was chased by the hospital for payment after I got home, luckily I had insurance which took care of it, from memory I think you are only covered to the same level as the local population and their cover isn't always as comprehensive as the NHS
