Hi guys,

My SCI-MX protein stuff has run out, and I'm after the cheapest way of getting protein in my diet.

Currently I'm eating cans of tuna, as they're good value at 4x cans for £350, with almost 40g of protein per can.

I've seen this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5lb-MATRIX-ANABOLIC-80-W...

Will this be any good?

I don't do massive amounts of weights, probably about 1 hour 3 times a week, so really don't need to go all out on the fancy / expensive ones.

Have you tried Holland Barretts special offers AND Swiftsupplements?

Speak to Rich and ask him about wholesale prices as he was offering that on the wholesale forum.

H&B stuff is awful! Full of filer when I saw a report on it previously.

I'd recommend myprotein, their business model lets them sell good quality protein at lower costs.

Either that or bulksupplements.

Goes well with milk. Much nicer than with water.

Remind me why we need so much protein? Does it result in faster recovery or bigger muscle growth? Or both?

Protein does not make muscles bigger per se. What it is used for is the recovery of damaged muscle from predominately weight lifting although of course plenty of other sports can cause it too.

So ensuring your muscles have what they require to repair tears caused by bodybuilding or similar helps improve the recovery time but also makes sure they've got what they need to grow bigger.

Interestingly I've found recently sipping BCAA's during training massively helps me when it comes to soreness, it tastes nasty but I don't really care!

I never used protein before using this and suffered badly with soreness 24-48 hours afterwards. Ive been 3 times since i bought this and find my muscles dont ache very much at all. I just take one shake for breakfast and one after a session. Plus working shifts as I do I found it hard to get any decent protein amounts in me when traing at say 6am after a night shift. This should really help. Just never had the drive to go regularly enough to warrant it before.

Thanks for the replies. The pain is not a problem (I hold directorship of a company and have tins of Redbull in the car, etc); so are you both saying that I could build a decent physique without taking this protein powder stuff?

Of course, if you can eat enough.

Actually nearly all supplements are not required if you can eat enough and 90% supplements are rubbish anyway.

Most recommend 1-2g of protein per pound of body weight. I usually aim for 1.5g, I aim for over 300g of protein each day.

Protein powder is purely for convenience although it can be especially helpful when trying to lose body fat and maintain muscle (less calories usually than eating food forms of protein) or when you need to take on a lot of protein for bulking.

Hang on, what if I don't eat enough protein? I do want to bulk up a bit.

If you don't eat enough you're not giving your body what it needs for optimal growth. You may still grow to some extent but you'll not achieve the same results with a less than great diet.

Diet is about 70% of the end result.
