Did anyone else not really enjoy the festive season?

Anyone else not looking forward to getting stuck back in to the normal work routine?

I think I need to make more of an effort to get more exercise this year. Time and motivation is always a struggle though!

Definitely not looking forward to work but I’ve found recently gym has had a good all
Round affect.

Trying not to think about another long year of working

Then don't!

I've said this for years; exercise in all guises is fking excellent for mental and physical health.

They are inextricably linked, whether you can admit it to yourself or not. If you're healthy on the outside, it's definitely not a given that you'll have a healthy mental state, but it helps.

And generally, humans like routine too. If it's gym before work, or after, it gives you something to look forward to. Progression. It's all baby steps, chipping away and continuing to be healthier and happier.

Work is necessary for almost all of us, to afford time to do things you wish to do. Drive, gym, family time, etc. A happy balance between working and free time is pretty bloody important for mental health too.

To anyone who has grappled with, or currently grappling with mental health battles, happy 2020. May it be your best year yet.

Decent. I've been getting more into the strongman stuff recently. Alongside ruining and cycling... I'll never be great at anything, but I enjoy the challenge of them all!

Me.

I went back to bed on Christmas Eve afternoon. Then tried really hard to be happy on the day with the in-laws. Feel tired and unmotivated a lot of time. I know something is wrong and so does my wife but it's so difficult to talk about it directly.

So I get a hug while I suppress crying.

The thought of going back to work on Monday fills me with dread. I've always been the shy type but as I get older I seem to be getting more self-conscious and anxious over everything.

On the plus side, only 35 years til retirement.

Hi mate

Sorry to hear this. Its probably worth talking to either a doctor or some private counselling, as much as those first steps may be tough.

Do you think there is something that has triggered this? Or is it your job? Can your firm help at all, any employee assistance at all or a chance of role?

I've mentioned on this very thread that I've suffered myself and there's been the odd blip since but someone much wiser once said depression is like the waves of the ocean. They come and go but ultimately the tide goes out. This really has helped me. But not as much as taking that first step did despite it being painful emotionally.

Also, whilst us chaps are wired not to believe this, there is absolutely nothing wrong with crying - I consider it to be pressure release.

Can any of us do anything at all?

Best wishes

Gav

Has anyone taken sertraline and found it not having any noticeable/positive effect?

Re. getting out exercising, it really does help and takes your mind off stuff that worries you. Whilst I'm on the waiting list for CBT therapy for extreme anxiety and mild depression which is always at it's worse this time of year I've made the decision to get off my arse and start being active. Started the couch to 5k running training, and alternating this with cycling and walking and starting to feel the benefits already even though it's hard to actually get out there and do it. Feels great to get out and achieve something albeit in small steps. Reading up I think I may have ADHD reading the symptoms, so maybe further down I'll get tested for that, I definitely feel like I'm on some kind of spectrum for certain!

I'm on 200mg/day. I've been on it for a while - right now I don't feel it's having any effect but that doesn't mean that it isn't. If I came off it I expect I'd notice!

If you have recently started on it then it can take a while to have an effect. Also different medicines work better/worse for different people.

Here we are. Sunday night. Yay.

Thanks for the reply btw.

When I can compose a coherent response I'll come back.

Hello everyone. I am still here and going back to work tomorrow after a month and a bit of toddler based activities and drinking too much coffee during the day. Its going to be a bit of a shock to the system...

Still not done anything with the house but can go back to it now with no hairs on the back of the neck type stuff now so thats an improvement. The funeral was on the 23rd so thats no longer hanging over me either.

I worked from home today as my team lead was also working form home and wanted to catch up to explain all the changes in the past (nearly 2) months.

We will both be back in the office tomorrow so that will be my first 'proper' day back.

My best friend died from a brain tumor today.
We've been friends for the last 35 years, Since I met him in scouts when we were about 8 and we bonded over a mural interest in fire and blowing things up..
About two years ago he was diagnosed, he had a tumor about the size of an average tangerine in his head. Surgery in France followed, the best surgeon available is there. 95% of the tumor was removed, followed by a year of chemo.
Thigs went spectacularly well, he was recovering miles better than we could have hoped.

In September the scan went perfectly. In November he stated to feel dizzy, it turned out that the tumor was now growing aggressively. Things continued quickly and he finally ended up on morphine and sedatives until his body gave out. He was 42.

I'm tired now and drunk.
I miss the most decent person I've ever met. He was essentially the conscience of my group of friends. He was funny too, throughout treatment and the final stages he was polite and friendly to the last.

All I want now is oblivion.

I've had issues before, no idea why I'm sharing now.
