Depression - Rock Bottom
Discussion
I am no doctor but my understanding is that ADs alone will only get you so far. You should combine their use with some sort of counselling or therapy to help you change your mindset for the better and help you get on with putting your life in a better direction.
I know it helped me understand myself better and understand how the things in life in the present and the past fit together - it really helps you move forward in your own life and will get you to a point where one day you won't even need ADs.
Did the GP refer you to any form of counselling? If not, you should speak to another doctor and ensure you mention the thoughts you have been having.
Otherwise, you can always find someone local to you and arrange a private appointment.

I wish you all the best and promise you will be able to get help dealing with this

Talking to someone (a professional if possible and usually not a GP) is always the best place to start and will help you most in the short and long term.
Prescribed drugs are usually not the only answer, but I believe they do have their place and for a lot of people they can help tremendously in the short and medium term.
GPs can't be expected to know which drugs or combination of drugs will be right for you. It's not that they are necessarily bad at their job, but they are not specialists and even if they were it's almost impossible to get the correct drug and dosage right first time. It takes time and a certain amount of trial and error to get this right. So don't lose hope if this course of action isn't working for you. Changing to a different anti-depressant or a combination could make a huge difference, but this in itself takes time and you need more immediate positive action.
So, talking to someone is by far the most important step to take immediately. The first few words are often the hardest, but you will feel so much better for doing it.
This time of year can often trigger these negative feelings for a number of reasons and it's very easy to think that everyone else is having a great time and you're the only one feeling the way you do. Not so.
You are not alone, there are a lot of people out there who want to help and will help you if you give them the chance.
Good luck and please let us know how you get on as it can be a massive help to others in the same situation.

Going to a doctor for pills only resolves the symptoms not the underlining problems. I am not a fan of pills and never take them, but exercise get give you a good boost. Attacking it from many angels like counseling, exercise and relieving of friends and family is a good start. It is like a cancer, if unchecked will consume your life.
The first step is communicating your problems, the next is doing something to resolve them.
If you every need some guidance from, someone who has been there drop us a pm anytime..
My Nan always said things are 'never as bad as seem.'

I talked to Samaritans once, I told them how I felt etc. and the woman replied "have you considered suicide?", I was like "uh... thanks for the suggestion".
I went to the GP twice, first time I was turned away because the apparently didn't have time to talk to me (I had an appointment), the second time (I requested a different Doctor) they told me just to go to a meeting at a community centre. Total waste of time. It took me years to build up the courage to speak to a Doctor and when I finally did I got nowhere.

I am completely overwhelmed by all the messages of support. I cannot tell you all how much it means right now. I had been holding off sharing my problems on PH but sitting here now I should have done it sooner.
Thank you all
Glad to hear it, chap.Thank you all
This responses in this thread has made me feel much better (just imagined they apply to me).
I won't pretend I'm suffering with depression, but having had some very hard moments over the past couple of weeks does put thoughts into the head which really ought not be there.
PH really isn't all that bad, despite what you read in the lounge.
