long long time ago, competed as a junior only as never intended to juice.

4 comps in total, 1st was after 1yr training & very embarrassing (16) junior natural UK, not last but no far off hehe

last comp was at 19 I think, I was huge by junior stds, not cut but probably 11%, won by virtue of the fact that I dwarfed the comp, Junior South England, posedown at the end between all catagories for an overall win saw my on stage against Dave Poole winner of the over 90kg, I didn't look out of place next to him & it was awesome, came 2nd to him though. wasn't a massively strong field tbh looking back but it was fun smile

carried on training to competitive levels but never competed again, might do s seniors later on in my years.
Cheers! Very interesting that. I used to train with folk like Christopher "Sugar" Robinson, Andy James, Steve Brooks, Gary Noakes - still going apparently - and others who used to be on the circuit back in the 80s and 90s, so it's interesting to hear from others who competed a while back.
cool did you compete? I recollect some of those names, got me thinking if dave still competed as he must be in his 50s now, low n behold he competed in this years NABBA midlands comp in class 3, 2nd, looks allot smaller but more natural wink great shape for late 40s though.

Allot of advice I took was given to me by ex olympia competitor Gordon Somerville, incredible genetics in terms of natural muscle gain. (non needle)

No, I never did - encouraged to by a gym owner (I think he was trying to build a stable to 'sell' his gym!) but not my thing, way too insecure biggrin

I looked up a few names and a couple I can find, Andy James seems to have made a very successful career out of it - owns a gym - and Gary is back at it and did pretty well in the NABBA Universe coming 7th last year. There's an interesting archive going back to the 80s photos and programme notes with blokes I knew on the website for Quirkes Gym in Sheffield, brings back memories.

I remember being impressed watching Steve Brooks doing ultra strict lateral raises with 80lb dumbbells back then. yikes

wow! 36kgs for lat raises is good, I remember the Barbarian twins pic in Beef It where they're curling 68kg dumbells, insane!

I would love to search through some of my old memories like that, I bet that's quite something for you smile

weirdly I had to train in Sheffield last Christmas, the only place I could find was like an old school that had been converted, it'd obviously been there a long long time as the equipment was ancient (but jut to my liking) huge base speakers from a night club up on window cills a real 80s gym feel to it & very notalgic for me as thats the sort of place I started in, I mention it because it looks very similar to the one you've posted, maybe its the same? small world if so.

Ah, but this nostalgia has its pitfalls! I just looked up Sugar Christopher and found this site

http://www.facebook.com/sugarsfitnesscentre#!/suga...

and it looks like one of the young up and comers was in the press for escaping from a mental hospital where he was in for rape. I could be wrong and don't want to get sued but the name is unusual and the mug shots look just like him 20+ years on.

Looking at a photo of the desk and doorway to the gym took me back - then I realised it's nearly 30 years, groan. Still remember the mix of excitement and nerves every time I went down, and the first session he trained me through - loads of reps, loads of sets and bugger all rest. Still ache today!

The gym is Sheffield might be the one - old school and hard core and has had some very big (and scary) characters including lots of the fighters from Brendan Ingles' gym, quite a few I've trained with over the years.
