Consider the bigger picture, you have indicated that you have in the past drank greater amounts of alcohol, and at present averaging 30-40 units a week, the recommendeed amount of units being 21 for the average male. At what point would you consider you might have, or be hedding for significant health issues which are alcohol related.
Good question old....er happy chap.

To be honest I've never imagined there would be any alcohol related health problems from my drinking. As far as I was concerned I was only having a good time. However, a few factors which comprises of me being of work for a week, Xmas + new year drinking marathon, more time to actually relax and not think about work etc has made me realised something is not normal these past few days.

I know what a proper hangover is but I've experienced something rather awkward. It feels like a stty hangover (if there's such a thing...) So I've spent some time pondering and Googling and came to the utmost suspicion that this could be some form of mild alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

Naturally I am a bit worried and curious hence why I've posted. I do love a drink or two (or three ...) but after reading about the very real alcohol withdrawal symptoms I do not want actually progress to a more serious stage.

I don't even know there's such a thing as alcohol withdrawal (and how serious it could be) until these few days!

Anyhow I've downloaded the nice little NHS drinking app on my iPhone to closely measure how much I drink. I was not very familiar with units beforehand as my "unit" is when I can't see straight anymore but I will certainly learn more from today onwards. When's a better time to start but a brand new year eh? wink

6 Pints and 5 double shots is 'professional levels'! That must be getting on for 30 units! I can't imagine drinking all that in one go. Surely that must be more damaging than have the same 30 units spread over the week?

I have a a couple of gin and tonics every day so probably getting on for 35 units a week and have done so for the last 20 years. I don't binge drink as I don't like to not remember the previous night and I like to be confident I can drive the next day. I also don't like the idea of sitting in my own vomit.

I also don't like the idea of sitting in my own p*ss in an old people's home like my grandparents did so I'll take my chances with 35-40 units a week.
6 pints and 5 double shot is my absolute max since last few years. Any more than that and I start to get sick/blackout which is not nice hence I generally avoid smile
I don't really drink it in one sitting but throughout a single night. Don't really do that much maybe once or twice a month.

My normal comfort zone would be around 3 bottles of nice cold bud each evening after work smile

Consider your first alcohol drink and the fuzzy feeling it gave you, now your saying that it takes 3 bottles of Bud to get that same feeling, at some point it will take 4 then 5 to achieve that same feeling this is an indication that your tolerrance level to alcohol is becoming greater. Just something to consider.

I've no idea who this George Thorogood chap is but sounds like he knows his drinks. Nothing like a good chaser while downing that pint.

yes, I know my tolerance has increased thoroughout the years. I don't want it to increase further but still want to enjoy drinking though...

Time to grow up and have more discipline I reckon!

I detect a hint of media-frenzy MMGW/C SARS Bird Flu Aids end-of-the-world-is-nigh about this subject.

I think there's a lot of difference in people's views on alcohol depending on the country you live in and what age group you're in, and there's a lot of difference in alcohol tolerance between individuals. Prohibition was always attractive to a certain type of person, just like anti-smoking, anti-sex, anti-drugs, anti-speeding, anti-whatever they don't get enjoyment from themselves.

Before anybody mentions it, I'm not saying alcohol doesn't cause problems.

I know people who can get drunk on one or two pints and had a friend who used to have 10 pints and you wouldn't know it. Many people around the world drink a bottle of wine a day (or the equivalent) which is 50-100 units a week and feel just fine.

Having said that, if you have those symptoms, perhaps you're drinking too much.

Cheers!

Alcohol is a very cleaver drug that can take a greater priority in your life if you give it the opportunity. You can still enjoy a drink and have a good binge now and again, it's more about having an awareness of how much alcohol you are getting through on a regular basis and the long term effects, some which are evident, and others that are not.

I've felt no real side-effects apart from a disrupted sleep pattern and mildly increased anxiousness. 11th day now cold turkey and it is getting a little easier as the craving is thankfully reducing, most probably due to New Year having been & gone!
