Long story short, went to A&E yesterday morning as I was finding it extremely hard to breath. They checked out my heart, bloods and lungs and all fine but it turns out that the muscles in my chest had got pulled or strained or something. Painkillers and some strong anti-inflammatory drugs and I am far better today and the hospital said I should be fine in another few days. Scared the hell out of me though as I am normally very healthy and I was really fighting for breath.

What I dont understand is what could have caused that - I had not done anything out of the ordinary, not carried anything heavy etc so could anyone of the clever doctor types on here suggest a cause or is it just one of those weird things that happen?

On a related note, I went to Northwick Park A&E and was treated rapidly, extremely well and even though the first doctor said he was 99% sure he knew the problem he still sent me off for a battery of tests to make certain. The NHS may not be perfect but I was really impressed by the standard of medical care and the fact that all the staff were really terrific even when the A and E seemed rather busy. Reminded me in no uncertain terms just how lucky we are in the UK to have the healthcare we have.

Thanks in advance for any replies. Even though it is a minor thing I would like to gain some better understanding of what I may have done!

It's easy to pull a muscle, just an odd stretch can do it.

I had similar when younger, cartilage damage was the explanation. Sharp pains if I remember correctly, it would reoccur without stretching before explosive sports such as golf! I was told that if coughing got rid of it don't worry (add disclaimer here as I have no medical qualifications).

Not really!

SO it is just one of those odd things that one does then and no real reason to worry about?

As I said, I am much better now and should be fine in another day I think. Really appreciate the replies.

BTW- Happy New Year all!

Yes, I got a ride in an ambulance and treated like a pincushion for similar reasons last March. Not pleasant.
