My fourteen year old daughter wants to do this, as a parent I'm dead set against it. She says her piercings will reduce to a normal size if she does it "right".

Has anyone done it and more importantly have their ears returned to normal?

I'd like to know the facts, but for now, "NO" will have to suffice biggrin

As long as she increases in size slowly and doesn't go over around 10mm (depends on her lobes) she'll be fine.

If she goes to quick she'll have them blowing out the back and they'll scar and won't heal back over nicely when she leaves them out.

It's really not any different from pierced ears, let her go for it

It looks st, but that's not going to solve your problem of how to stop her from doing it.

One of the most useful techniques I was taught in Problem Solving was to ask "Why?" several times to make sure you get to the root of the issue.

Why does she want to get it done?

-I would guess she'll say because it looks cool.

Why does it look cool?

-I would guess she'll say because the cool kids do it.

Why does she want to copy the cool kids when individualism is cool and copying other people is lame?

-She'll probably strop off to her room, but at least you can stand there, arms folded, and looking smug.

HTH. biggrin

There was a huge amount of stropping but then miracle of miracles I found some comments from plastic surgeons all of whom said "it'll never go back to normal and will require some degree of surgery"...

After a "heated exchange of views" she's decided against it after all bounce

Good news, thats a truly horrible modification and stuff like this can also affect any career she may have in the future.

I put stretched ears in the same category as stretched tyres on cars...

That was one of my levers too biggrin She is working hard with a view to becoming a doctor, I asked her how many doctors she'd seen with stretched ears...

When faced with a job interview, it would most certainly create an immediate disadvantage, having worked in numerous organisations coaching and encouraging employers to recruit the person not the packaging, i can confirm that regardless of anything else, first impressions are almost impossible to overcome, regardless of the applicants overall ability.

Pleased your daughter has for the moment decided to abstain from doing anything that may have affected her chances later in life.

"Stretch" is something of a misnomer.

When you put tension on skin, it causes new skin to grow in an attempt to relieve that tension[1]. As such unless she sticks with like a 5mm plug, its likely she'll end up with larger holes than just normal pierced ear holes and will have to have something in there at all times.

[1] Think fatties, get fat, skin under tension, skin grows. Lose weight, baggy skin. Also burn victims, balloons are placed under their skin to grow new skin to cover the burns.

I had a 10mm one and an 8mm one when I was younger. They went back to normal.

Do you interview prospective employees naked with their hair tied back then?

Suited and booted and hair styled down you'd never know. In fact it could take years, let's say five, before anything was realised, and then maybe only because the employee chose to part with the information.

Believe me.

Or platinum and diamond studded tunnels wink

There's some very exquisite and bespoke body jewellery available these days.

If she does stretch her ears, it's advisable to go a good six weeks between stretches in my experience. Anything over 12mm I think would prove hard to return to 'normal' , though I've known almost twice this return. There's often always an side which will be more painful/trouble to stretch too. And whilst it's a couple of quid for a taper to DIY, a fiver plus jewellery costs will see it professionally executed.

Had you bothered to read my comments properly you would have worked out that I was defending people's personal preferences and identifying that perspective employers can still be put off by appearances even after coaching on selection and recruitment protocols
