Going into hospital to have 3 out of 4 out in several weeks time. Told I will be going under general. One of them is very close to the nerve so told there is higher risk of lip and tongue numbness afterwards. frown
I react very badly to general anth. (can't even keep water down) so wondering how much time I can expect to be off work? And any other advice from PHers who have had this done? Quite nervous, ridiculous as it may seem.

I would discuss with the anaesthetist about previous experience with generals, they might be able to give you a good combination of anti-emetics.

I had a left lower impacted extracted in 1991 under general by a maxillofacial surgeon. And I still got very slight numbness and tingling from left corner of mouth for a couple of years afterwards. I suppose if it's lodged against that big nerve there's not much they can do to avoid touching it,

As far as the procedure is concerned there is nothing to be "nervous" of. They prep you with a sedative. The next thing you know you are awake in the recovery room after what you think has been a few minutes. Book a couple of days off work as there will be a bit of bruising but nothing a couple of Ibuprofen can't handle.

I had mine out in about 40 minutes under local anasthaetic a couple of years ago. In and out in an hour.

Are there complications which make it necessary to have a general anasthaetic?

P.S. I'm not trying to appear hard - I was st-scared before I went in. It helped that it was an absolutely gorgeous lady surgeon, but I genuinely didn't feel a thing - the first two were out before I knew it. I thought she was still busy with preparations.

About 8 years ago, I had all 4 taken out under general due to two of them being impacted and only slightly visible through the gum so not a completely straightforward extraction.

I ended up with an infected socket afterwards which took 4 days to clear so all in all, I was off for a week. If it hadn't got infected I'd have been back at work after a couple of days.

I had 4 out a few years ago. Was told it would take 40 minutes.

I was under for 7 hours, they had to page another specialist. Had part of my skull cracked, and another piece sawn off. Holes opened between my mouth and sinus, face was swollen 2-3 inches on each side. Was in excruciating pain for 2 weeks, couldn't eat properly for a month.

Two complications; my upper wisdom teeth were at an angle and partly fused to my skull, plus the teeth/bone was unusually strong. As i understand it they basically spent 7 hours hitting me with hammers. Be afraid, very afraid.

But i'm sure you'll be fine laugh

SunbeamAlpine: If the wisdoms are impacted you DON'T want to have them out in the chair under a local!

My upper two were done in the chair and popped out in a couple of seconds with no pain or discomfort at all. The lowers were impacted and had to be broken up and dug out in hospital under a general.

Erm, what does impacted mean?

Mine are partially under the gums, and bottom ones are lying sideways. frown

I've had a letter stating 18 weeks wait, though the hospital said 8-12 when I was there. Dreading it.

Well, tomorrow's the day..let's hope it doesn't go horribly wrong as next of kin are 120 miles away.

Had all four of mine out last year under general anaesthetic. They said I could have local but I was quite happy to be under for it. They were all partially erupted, not impacted and I had it done under my private healthcare as I've had problems with them off and on over the years.

A week off work to recover, some pain for the first couple of days, had to eat soft or liquid food for a week, everything was fine.

Hope it goes OK. smile

Well it was OK..yesterday I felt almost back to normal but since last night got the worst pain yet. Only on one side though. Necking painkillers and hoping it's not infected. :-(

It's probably just where it's healing over. Mine hurt for a few days before I could go without painkillers. Just be careful what you eat.

I had one of mine taken out about 4 years ago.

I went to the dentist she injected me tried to pull it out but i could feel it, she injected agian the same happend, She tried for a 3rd time but i could still feel it. I was told to go to the dental hospital to get it done.

So a few weeks later pooping my pants big time ! I went to the dental hospital go in the chair fella injected me asked me if i could feel anything i said no next thing i no he said have a swill out. He'd taken it out OMG i honestly thought he was just tapping about checking if the injection had worked getting ready for the big pull. He did a brilliant job i really didnt realise he'd taken it out.

It was bleeding and a bit sore for a few days but nothing to bad at all.

Hadn't spotted this thread before.

I had my lower right impacted wisdom tooth extracted last Tues. I appear to be recovering ok, with just the odd bout of pain now and again. I did get a bit of a fright when I realised last Thursday eve, that he had also stitched my cheek to my gum.

Turns out it's fairly normal, but I really wish he'd told me at the time!

The only bugger is that I do weight / strength training and I'm still too paranoid to lift anything heavy for fear of bursting the wound.

Off to hospital I go, in so much pain even codeine isn't touching it.
Great start to my time off work, shouldn't have ignored it when it started hurting on Sunday. :-(

I had 2 wisdom teeth taken out a couple of years back. One took about 15 seconds to remove. The second one was impacting, and took 20 mins of drilling the tooth in half/poking/yanking with surgical pliers to get the thing out.

I really wished I hadn't had it done under local aesthetic.

Back to the dentist this morning, because a week after the extraction, I'm still in pain and I suspected "dry socket"

It IS dry socket. Bugger. grumpy

So, he took the remainder of the stitches out and put a wad of cloves into the hole. Anyone else ever experienced this? Any magic tips?!

Nah, I'm not a smoker.

I've been trying to drink and eat using the opposite side of the mouth to avoid dislodging the stuff.
