I have an appointment tomorrow for this.

But, unlike when I have had other scans etc, I have not received any paperwork etc, this appears to have gone missing in the post.

So what should I expect? Google suggests it is similar to a lady having a scan for a baby. Is this correct?

It is an ultrasound, practically identical to the baby scan. I remember the radiologist having a blast at spending 20 minutes pressing on my full bladder!

hehe

Phone the clinic. You may need to drink 2 litres of water one hour before the appointment and not pee it away!

Here's a reply from the Prostate thread:

Pray they aren't delayed because you have to drink about 2 litres of water before the check. When I had a scan, they were running 45 minutes late... which is an eternity when you have a full bladder. Also, it was the coldest day of the year (when we had the snow problem a couple of years ago) which didn't sooth my need to piss. The subsequent toilet visit was the nearest I've been to heaven.

Also, the mothers-to-be did wonder wtf a lone man was doing in the queue. If I wasn't in such a rush to piss after the check, I'd have come out, held my abdomen and exclaimed, "It's a boy!!"

It's probably too late now, but as I'm having a scan tomorrow, I do have the Abdominal & Pelvic Ultrasound Scan Information sheet with me.

As you already know, yep, is pretty much like any other ultrasound in that they smother you in gel and move the probe about. The sheet I have here says to drink 1 pint of water an hour before the appointment and don't go for a pee.

This sounds quite simple really, but most people I know who require this type of scan regularly have a common side effect of their ailment that requires them to have the scan in the first place and that is the sudden urge and the frequency they need to go wee-wee's!. Good luck, don't wee on the Doc if he presses too hard.

SO is that a deffo that I have to drink beforehand?

I have absolutely no paperwork. The only reason I know of the scan is that I queried with the Doc why the appointment was taking so long, they checked and rang me to tell me.

I guess I could drink a pint of water, and then if I need not have done it its no harm done.

As for the scan, I have no symptoms. Basically Doc gave me blood pressure pills, that didn't work as expected, they put up the pressure rather than lower it. As a result he want to be sure my kidneys are undamaged.

I drank 2 litres of water on Sunday at 3pm, and had to get rid around 5.30pm so should be fine drinking a pint and holding for an hour.

You know how they always run late at hospitals... guaranteed to do it when you really, really need to go.

I don't know how these scan may vary depending on what they are looking for but the info sheet I was given to read prior to my scan tomorrow said I had to drink 1 pint of water an hour before the examination.

OK, I've been for the scan. It was an MRI one.

Except, the scan wasn't done, I couldn't fit in the machine comfortably.

So, its back to the doc for options.

Well I did ask for my feet to go first, so my head didn't have to go right through, but this was refused.
