I've been trying to get into running lately and have come across a strange stumbling block. I can only run for any length of time if i am talking :-/ i have been for a run with my mate a few times and can manage 3miles at 8min/mile whilst nattering all the way round but if i try to run on my own i end up out of breath, has anyone else experienced this before it's really frustrating me as i want to apply for the raf but need to be able to run on my own for fitness tests etc any advice would be greatly appreciated

Sounds like you're running faster on your own than with your mate. Are you sure you're doing 8min/mile in both situations?

I don't know i've never managed a mile on my own. I can do a mile in 7minutes on the treadmill but it's a lot harder than running a mile with someone else.

Warm up properly/set off slower on your own. If you can run 3 miles with a friend you can run 3 miles on your own, once you get your head and/or pacing right.

The problem with running is it's fking boring.

With my headphones in I'll run all day long, should I lose my headphones I can't do a mile.

I try to vary my routes, include cross country, and sprints. If you can get to the level where you're sprinting cross country, you'll not need to talk... You'll not be able to!!! ; )
