all my nutrients & essential fatty acids come from other sources, if I eat all the yolks i may as well eat all the pies wink I'd be somewhat portly to say the least eek

I use egg whites as a good form of cheap protein, that's it.

through experimenting I've found that I need 220 grammes of protein a day, that's difficult to do unless you get a good amount in with each meal, my body struggles with exploiting more than about 30 grammes in one sitting, that means 7-8 meals a day, this in turn means that I need some simple, fast, transportable ways of eating that dont impact in a negative way on my/our lives nerdsmile
egg yolks aren't fattening and any cholesterol in them (very little) will be offset by your body producing less.

more the calories chap, over the week, 1000 v 3000 + the 150mg of cholesterol in an average yolk i'd rather avoid, i can do more with egg whites on their own to smile

not saying the odd yolk is bad for you, absolute opposite, I love a fried egg with asparagus smile but 60 yolks added to my diet would (as I said) leave me portly because I would still need all the other foods I eat for health, I wouldn't make way in my diet for 60 yolks, i would for a whole pavlova though biggrin

Well, the colesterol isn't an issue, you body produces that natutally anyway and if you take in a little more from egg yolks your body will naturally produce less.

in small quantities, yes, but it would not be able to counteract 1200mg of cholesterol a day hehe you're welcome to try biggrin

I eat enough yolks for it to be healthy, its like anything really, to much of any one thing is unbalancing.

People worried about cholesterol, fatty acids, hear disease etc. might want to look at some of the recent research on the possible true culprit - sugar, particularly in the form of fructose, often added as a so-called healthy sweetener from fruit juice.

The argument is that the liver can't cope with large amounts of this at a time and produces fats releasing these as triglycerides into the blood stream. Too much tri-nastycide is implicated in, well, nasty things...

I'm cutting back on the protein bars (PHd) and supposedly 'whole fruit' jam - used several times a week on my ryvita and philly extra light main evening meal, doh! - that use fructose/fruit juice as a sweetener/filler because of the association with gout (which I still feel despite nearly 4 years as a teetotaler) and no / little purine diet.

The way I see it is, you don't really have to worry too much about how many Eggs (and cholesterol) you eat if:-

1) your Polyunsaturated intake is ... I would say high, but here I'm learning I need to be a tad more verbose... so I say, high enough to balance out your LDL:HDL ratio. High Cholesterol intake, then have a high polyunstaturated fat intake.

2) you do loads of intense exercise, to promote the release and production of testosterone, which in turn should help use up excess Cholesterol.

But if your anti-oxidant intake is high (mainly Vit C!) then your free-radicals should be kept under control and there is less chance of LDL's malfunctioning, which is what the real problem is with LDL's and Cholesterol... and is where sugar comes in because Glucose/Dextrose is highly reactive, which means it loves to release free radicals and/or attach itself to er, er, tryglycerides (IIRC).

well, too much protein will kill your liver anyway. Takes a few years to have an effect but then it's basically too late. A case of 'well I look great on the outside' but actually rotten in the inside, seen too many examoles of this, form before function.

See

and

lots of stuff around mainly from dieticians and physicians in the US claiming 20%+ ish of the diet from protein will smash the kidneys, liver and bones to mush and that the ammonia/urea will harm us. Excepting that our genetic/dietary history as humans included periods/societies where protein was a main source of food and the many weightlifters and bodybuilders from years ago - even pre steroids - who are still going strong after decades of a high protein diet..

I've had my liver and kidney function tested regularly and never had a problem described - despite the gout? - and usually have between 80 and 150g a day when dieting, rarely more than 200g a day even when not so think I'll risk it. My main issue is not drinking enough water, often due to my travelling for work and the issue of where to 'go'/whether I'll be able to go. I really need to sort this out before I give myself kidney stones!

I'm drunk, so this is pretty dam scientitfic...... My increase in eggs has had a direct correlation with good weight gain- only been say, 3 weeks, but unexpected results moving from intermittent fasting. ( ie, moving from IT to non IT) Some proper solid weight gain, even surprised myself!

To clear some things up- I am an obtuse, arrogant wker- without question...... But, I do know what works, generally, for strength related stuff anyway. Also, generally, you are wrong, so there we are, I've tried it and found out already..... should you not like my musings, you can enlighten me. I don't mean YOU, but I do mean HIM.

I now realise that this makes less sense the more I type.....I'm leaving it there. xx

Maybe.....

I eat loads and I've not died yet. I was eating 4+ a day but after a few years I now only have about a doz a week

It's not protein that will damage your kidneys, but other things in your diet

One big cause appears to be fructose so it's best not to base your diet on fruit, particularly concentrated products such juice, smoothies and dried fruit products (that's not to mention sugary foods like fizzy drinks, sweets, cake, cheap and/or rotisserie chicken etc).

e.g. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20071464
http://www.asn-online.org/press/files/johnsonrevie...

Of course, once your kidneys are screwed they won't handle protein particularly well, but they won't handle water properly either. No one seems to blame water for kidney disease, however.

Excellent musings..... Odd how the brain works when your drunk, though it seems to be a semi thought out post with some kind of drunken logic in there, possibly.

I rarely drink, maybe once a month- I used to be great at boozing, now I'm pretty rubbish at it, it always used to used to lead to all kinds of bother/situations after a drink- now I seem to post barely lucid ramblings on a car forum- So much easier to deal with in the morning! Progress I suppose!

I have a light week this week, filled with eggs and probably some kind of crossfit/kettlebell conditioning stuff for a change to the heavy norm.

I also got a free tub of protein for being the first person in my gym to press the inch dumbbell.

Sexy eggs for breakfast!
