Chaps

So, last night I ran 10k...for the first time ever.

Ive always had a constant battle with my weight. At my heaviest I was 19stone. At my skinniest I was 14 stone. i'm currently 15.5stone

In a bid to get down to 14 again (aiming for 13 though), I have taken up running. I have never been a runner, indeed my previous weightloss was down to cycling. But for the last few weeks I have been building up my distances.

I started out doing 2k's after a couple of them I graduated to 5k, a few more of those and I thought to myself last night i'm going to push for 6k.

Well, I hit 6k, and I kinda just didnt stop. Before I knew it I had done 10k in a time of 1hour and 4 mins (I have no idea if this is a good time or not). I have to say i'm proud of myself. I really cant wait to get back out for my next run. I feel great.

However, I a blister developed on the side of my foot. I think I was wearing the wrong socks, so i've not got a pair of proper running socks. My question is how long will it take for the blister to heal? today is my rest day, I would like to go for a run tomorrow, is that advisable? I can walk with only a little niggle and the compeed blister plaster is helping hugely, but its annoying that I did so well and now I have a stupid setback!!

So any advise on how to treat the blister? And how to become a better runner smile

Thanks

ET

Similar story to you. Was also at 19 stone, took up running to reduce it down, currently 17.5.

I had blisters when I started. You may just have to let that one heal, unless the compeed works enough to run without it hurting. If you have a big blister you can sterilize a needle and burst it, then cover it with sterile dressing.

Prevention is better than cure for blisters.

Get some dual layer socks (1000 mile or Hilly) - this probably the most important point. Cotton socks are awful as they hold moisture.
I wipe my feet over with surgical spirit morning and night which toughens the skin up.
Make sure your shoes fit and are tied tightly.

For running when you've got a blister: Compeed

For preventing future blisters: Decent running socks

Hilly's Supreme Monosock are really good - I used to blister, but since using them I've not had a single one.

Oh and get over to the running thread in Sports...

Put Vasaline on your feet to prevent blisters as well as using double layer socks.

Well done on your achievements. Great advice above on treatment & prevention of blisters. And a final word of caution; be really conscious, despite your enthusiasm and early gains, that hauling a large frame around for long distances can create its own problems. Really take it easy, give plenty of time to recover and continue the weight loss through other activity too such as diet and swimming. Good luck!

Tell me about it! I had really bad shin splints to begin with. Used ice and compression after every run and rested when they got bad and now they are fine. It takes a lot of effort to shift 19 stone around and generally if it is all fat it doesn't mean your legs are strong enough to take it always.

thanks for the replies, encouragement and feedback guys. I'm going to check out the running thread when I get a chance.

Slightly miffed though- instead of resting yesterday and FiL and I decided to throw the medicine ball around for a bit. We did sit ups (where your partner throws the ball to you while you're sitting down you do a sit up and throw it back. Rinse and repeat.). Anyway the exercise put alot of stress on my stomach and ribs, which are now killing me!! hehe I wanted to go for a run today!

So today is an enforced rest day, which I hope will see me right as i'm planning a run tomorrow.

Good effort
1 hour is your next target when you fully transition into longer distance running.
