Yep, most can outright lift heavier with the barbell, but I think this is because it's an easier lift (less balance) and the leverage is slightly different (hands pushing out). I wonder what the difference in weight would be if you could find a barbell weight that would activate the same number of fibres...or is it even possible? How would you hit centre chest with a standard barbell grip? Having said that I've noticed barbell grip trend is getting narrower but you can't squeeeeze in, that's the problem.
I'm sure it would be possible- I take a fairly wide grip, and my chest feels fairy battered from inner to outer by the time I'm done. My preference is for the barbell because you can't rest/pause heavy DB's- once you've failed, you'll not get more- mostly because you have to get back into position, and start form the bottom. I do like DB's for variation though- they're just a pain in the ass getting into position, and repping to failure.

What weight DBs is your safe limit?
Not sure. Probably somewhere above 34kg but below 40kg. I don’t have any DBs in that range, though, so I would have to buy new ones just to bench with them. I remember using 36s for highish reps in some gym that didn’t have proper benches.

This is how I get into position, to avoid starting from the bottom. They're pressed against my knees right up until they're fully elevated.

Cool, just curious coz your pressing strength is pretty good, iirc.

Similar to what I do- still a pain when they're 60kg + though!

That's good up to about (subjective) quite heavy. No way on earth I'd even think about doing that with really heavy. Couldn't even get them both onto my knees!

Not really. BB bench press max of around 120kg. I think I am quite good at landmine press, but nobody does that lift!

Sure!

I put the heavier ones on the DB rack, on top of other DBs. That puts them at almost knee level, so no lift from the floor. Just a small lift off the rack, straight against thighs/knees, then sit down and tip back.

Some of us have lived our whole lives without leg drive. We prefer not to talk about it.

And those with 'planted' feet are easy to spot amongst the sea of St Vitus Dance plonkers.

Why use leg drive unless you want to compete? Let the muscles you want to work do the pushing!
