Was questioning the need for our pro gym since basic-fit opened up 12 miles away, I’m not now!

We’ve been on full lock down here for 2 weeks now

1) Kick Started our potager again so we have fresh veg in 8 wks and orchards provide fresh plumbs, pears, apricots, peaches, cherries, walnuts and hazelnuts

2) mown running track round our perimeter 2.2 miles

3) AC now fitted in gym ready for when heat arrives

I’m permitted to cycle to nearest shopping which is 12mile round trip

Only feker is I can’t drive the toys & can only walk the dogs starting from home (can’t drive to a walk)

Really feel for you guys not being able to train, I’d go mad as it’s needed even more when you’re restricted elsewhere, I guess calisthenics is the answer and getting inventive..

My moan is at myself 😭

I decided to cancel my membership as it’s £43 per month and had decided not to go as of 2 weeks ago due to the virus. Got an email 1week later saying no payment would be taken when closed and a £200 voucher when they reopened 😭😭😭

Managed to burn loads of calories away skiing so the abs come back naturally = sweet.

Not been able to run for 3.5 weeks due to possible virus, abs gone laugh (or still there just not as visible)

Back in Mid Feb, tweaked my left shoulder doing floor press, wasnt a SB/PB but something happened inside where the ligament was, couldnt do any weights on that side, managed to ski via pain killers. Pain went, moving some stones 20m, nothing heavy i felt but pains come back. Doctor thinks left shoulder tendon could be damaged as its the same feeling when i did my right. Local Private MRI unit is being given to the NHS from next Wednesday so not sure when i can be seen or even when i can get surgery to fix it (if required)

I would do a lot of research before committing to a shoulder surgery. Often long term outcomes are poor and worse than doing concerted rehab alone.

Oh i definately dont want surgery given its taken a few years to rebuild the right regarding strength (strangely after the 1st one which was the reattachment, i kept alot of strength per se and could do a pull up once out of the sling, after the second to release the frozen shoulder, couldnt do a single pull up and cant now pre C19). Anyway it seems abit weird and the pain from lifting the stones seems to have gone and im able to do some press-ups... so im guessing i must have trapped a nerve

Talking of which, after possibly having the virus, and whilst i was never a big press-up upperer, struggled to do 10 reps. This is is only a month of being away from the gym where i was still training the right side and say 2 months since i damaged the left but both sides struggled, shoulder strength has remained roughly the same

Does anyone know when their gym is likely to open up?

So far mine (one of the 'BETTER' branded gyms) isn't opening any time soon. But some are opening and require people to book 1hour slots for them to go to the gym, with changing rooms being closed. I've seen similar things frrom other countries coming out of the lockdown. Book your slot, to ensure no more than x-number of people at the gym at any one time.

Booking 1hr slots at the gym is gonna be like trying to book supermarket deliveries back in March / April.

They're doing the time slot thing at one of the big gym chains here. Doesn't appeal to me.

Where are they allowing people into a gym?

That’s absolutely NOT permitted.

I'm sure you know already, but if you are doing pressups at a 90 degree angle for the arms it puts a lot of strain on the joint.

Best of luck with recovery, I've had rotator cuff issues before so I don't envy any shoulder problems. Luckily swapping up my bench position and pressing a bit lower down the body has been good with mine.

One of the local gyms i used to go to is getting ready to open it seems, posting pictures of them deep cleaning the gym, getting new equipment in etc. so will be interesting to see if it opens in a few weeks time or not

Good for them but cleaning it now is a bit premature.

I can’t see a gym operating in any meaningful way before August.

I cant either but maybe they are hoping for the booking slot thing to happen and trying to get ahead of the game?

the gym i go to, could quite easily open with the 1/1.5m ruling and no booking slots. Though the gym swapped hands just before this kicked off so not sure if it will reopen again or not. Im still paying my £25(?) monthly but might stop it soon.

on another moan, luckily i purchased some weights (York spin locks jobbies so up to 40kg) and had noodle bands and thick bands so dont need them but the cost of weights either new or on ebay - what a joke/rip off some of the prices people want.

Thought id get a yoga mat to lay on for doing some floor presses - £30+ quid when pre C19 - £5. Ended up getting a camping roll mat (15mm) for around £12 though probably should have got the one from argos (8mm) for £6.

My gym here in Guernsey has been opened for 4 days, they limit numbers to ten, which would constitute being pretty busy, so access is easy.

Cancel that DD immediately!

With regard to opening it’d be very easy to run a gym with social distancing in situ.

Alas the operators have very weak lobbying at Parliamentary level ( Contrast it with pubs, clubs, bars and restaurants)

Those leisure and hospitality businesses are banging on the door and on the front page of the news EVERY SINGLE DAY. Talking about the devastating effects of closure in regards to job losses, business viability and mental well being of customers.

The health clubs barely figure which is a shame as at a time like this they could absolutely add massively to any UK recovery.

But as I say the trade bodies have little leverage with political decision makers so are forgotten.

My gym had the top floor kitted out with 10+ power racks and half racks. all of them were well placed out, plenty of distance between them all. but they then decided to shove all the weights section in to a smaller area on the ground floor.

then use the top floor for all the classes.

doesnt make sense to me considering...
- ive seen some classes be done outdoors
- some be done in private rooms
- some get done in the local park instead.

that gym i mentioned opening up has opened but alas its for outdoor classes only and limited to 5 people keeping 2m apart.

1 class per day, 4 days a week and looking to add more classes next week.

Tbh, i cant see why the outdoor bootcamps cant start again (not that i participate in them as not for me), but most just seem to pop up in a free local field and train the members.
