I quit using nothing, no products. They just added to the frustration.

What did it for me was chest infections.

Coughs etc.

A real heads up of what smoking does for you.

I really don't believe vaping is safe. If it coats the interior of your car etc. What does it do to the soft permeable lining of your lungs?

fk that. Just quit.

Does it cost the interior of your car ?

Keep going everyone, I can assure you long term it’s the best thing you’ll ever do for yourself. But at the same time, I’d say use the gum/patches/vape or whatever to break the cigarette habit then when the time is right break the habit altogether.

Nicotine (IMHO) is just as much a problem as the rest of the shyte in cigarettes. Sure it won’t ruin your lungs, but for me it caused just a many dangerous silent problems. Using NRT my blood pressure soared, circulation was badly reduced, skin never looked fresh. While I was smoke free I was a million miles from being healthy. The real benefits came when cutting it all out.

9 years for me tomorrow. Knowing now how much it was wrecking me and how life has improved I couldn’t ever go back. Chances are it’ll be the hardest thing you’ll ever do, but the best. Don’t expect miracles overnight, they take months even years but they do come.

Good luck to anyone struggling, take it one day at a time and if you relapse don’t see it as a failure, just a temporary set back. I must have had 20 plus set backs along the way, but if I can do it eventually then trust me so can you.

Yup. Do what you have to do, any which way.

Way back someone would post they were quitting and, in what seemed no time at all, they'd be celebrating a year or two and for me the battle continued.

If you're thinking of stopping, make yourself accountable to a bunch of faceless usernames on the internet. Bizarrely, it helps!

Following on vapjng..

I've been told by a industrial Chemist friend that there's an ingredient in the vape liquid that's also in some toothpaste. It's fine at low temperature but when superheated there's no studies yet as no one intended to superheat it before.

Ontop of this the liquid isn't exactly loaded with healthy natural flavours or ingredients to coat your internals with.

I vape (in theory temporarily!) and am under no illusions. I think anyone who believes it is safe is a moron tbh. It's inevitable it will be found to do some sort of harm. It's one of the reasons I don't think it should be treated as a new hobby as many seem to do.

Having said that, I think it's also inevitable it's better than smoking. Our senses are pretty good judges, and there's next to no smell, and nothing goes yellow or brown, which has got to be good.

I'm not particularly worried tbh. I rarely drink, cook from scratch every day, don't drink fizzy drinks, tea or coffee and weigh 70kg. Neither do I gamble, do drugs or pay for sex. As vices go I don't think it's the worst. And it's probably the cheapest. smile

keep it up guys. I'm still just about coping chomping away on my nicotinell 1mg mints.

No lapses, yet - but when work has been busy/stressful, I've almost succumbed.

Last year, I managed to stop smoking for Jan and most of Feb, so I think that I've beaten that already this year.

I just remembered. I switched to fat cigars on special occasions and big nights out for a while.

Vape juice isn't 'superheated' in a vape.

I gave up just before xmas 2004, following a nasty health scare. I gave up weed (3 or 4 big joints every evening), about 1.5 litres coffee/day, to keep awake as a result of weed(!!), 20 fags/day, usually roll-ups with no filter, & about 10 units alcohol/day.

14 - odd years on, my teeth & gums are 100000% better & I'm reasonably sane! As a bonus, I'm several thousand pounds a year better off...

So how is it converted into a gas?

Hello - Just joined in. Today is day 1 of yet another attempt to give up. I'm on champix and realise that I came off WAY too early last time so I'm determined not to make that mistake again.

I gave up Easter 2018, wasn't that hard. 13 months later after going from size 8 to14 I gave up giving up.

Life is more pleasant, less stressful and I am able to persue my very favorate past time of flopping into my recliner with a coffee and a cigarette to watch a film. Another bonus is I can drive to my parents house late on Friday and back home again late on Sunday without falling asleep on the A55, the alternative is to drive at 100mph

I am also back down to size 8!

Well I had a sobering moment last week. A really nice guy at work passed away at the young old age of 51. He was the heaviest smoker I knew. We started out together 15 years ago and did our induction together. We got to know each other through many encounters at the smoking shelter. They said he had heart failure. He was slim and otherwise seemed healthy.

Now I don't know if smoking was a factor or not so I'm not going to preach but I can't help but feel deep down that it has played a part. Such a nice guy and he's left two devastated children behind so whenever I read on here that someone has given up, I think it can only be a good thing. So pleased I'm free and clear of all cravings now.

Having given up 5 years ago, I’m finally at the point where, if I so choose, I can smoke a few cigarettes if I’m out for a big session and not think about for months again.

I like that.

Good work folks. I've stopped for 3+ years but spent more of the thread as a smoker (to give you an idea of the struggle).

Let us know your struggles and successes, being accountable to other PHers is a help.

Good Luck, I just believe now, when you are ready to quit, it becomes easy. Once the will is really there.

Great Success, it really is worthwhile.

Day 13 as a non-smoker for me and day 10 for my wife.

Last week I took my kids (5 & 8) to Tenerife on my own as my wife had to work and no summer camps run in Berkshire. The Friday night before we were due to leave on the Saturday, I saw a superb Hypnotherapist in Woodley. Whilst it certainly isn't a magic bullet, it has been the least painful way to quit so far. My wife and I have been "hiding" from our kids since we started again in the hope they wouldn't see us smoking (absurd) - this week away was the perfect time to knock it on the head once and for all.

Absolutely committed to staying a non-smoker this time. The 2 times I have sustained cessation (3 years and 2 years), it was deaths in my immediate family that brought me right back to the weed. Whilst I'm bloody hopeful another death doesn't occur any time soon, I feel better prepared and significantly more committed this time.

Thanks to the chap further up the thread who spoke about his experiences with Hypnotherapy.
Poor form to quote yourself

Over a year now for my wife and I. I really feel like we've finally cracked it. It is possible chaps.
Tomorrow will be 2 years quit for me! I am convinced I will never go back to it, I haven't got the patience to go through a quit again, it's bloody hard work.

That combined with 8 months in the gym and I'm feeling the best I have ever felt in my whole life. For those still battling, don't give up. It's a very slow and unpleasant process but it really is worth it when you come out the other side.
