As posted earlier, post-op it is discomfort rather than actual pain though everyone's experience is different.
Most of the pain is in the anticipation!
Do you think you could turn up slightly tipsy just to like aid the pain. I am very worried and I am always braver after a couple of beers.

Crikey that was quick. I only seen the doctor Tuesday and she accepted my reasons and referred me. Today 3 days later the Surgery called saying we can see you a week before Christmas. Slightly taken back by the speed of all this, I asked if this a consultation and she said no the Doctor will have a 10 minute chat then proceed with surgery and it will only take 30 mins.

I had to politely decline this speedy Castration service as I wouldnt be able to take any more holiday in December as I have none left but did say my Holiday resets in January. My journey to becoming a Jaffa could have been done in 6 weeks but now I get to keep my sperm for another month.
Do your employers make you take holiday when you have surgery? Is this normal? I could (and should) have taken a few days leave fully paid, which thought was standard for this sort of thing?

The worst bit for me was the tugging of the pipes before cutting. Urgh

I don't actually no. I just thought that as it is a non urgent/health effecting surgery then it would fall under holiday. My employers are very good with health matters and other people I know who have had it done also used holiday.

Just booked mine for the 26th. Been waiting for the NHS since September when I saw the doctor. My consultation was supposed to be Dec, then Jan and now end of Feb. Got fed up of waiting so booked it privately. Rang up tonight, had a consultation on the phone and booked for two weeks time.

Seriousness?????

Take a wander round the kids ward before you go in for some inspiration on manning up rather than rock up drunk?

I’m not quiet sure why I felt the need to read this (and other threads) having asked for a referral the other day.
I’m still looking forward to it in a weird kind of way, hopefully only short term pain for long term gain!

Had mine over 30 years ago, yes the injection does sting a bit but not really any worse than any other injection, having the old chap and plums swabbed with a warm Betadine solution by a pretty nurse is some compensation.
I was "lucky" to have a group of student nurses observing (they did ask if I had any objections).
No pain afterwards at all for me, little bruising either, having to live like a celibate monk for a couple of weeks was more of an issue.

^^^^^ this Apart from all the students though. I went private in 1985 - cost £75 then - and no pain, just some discomfort, one day off and back at work as normal.

Does anyone have experience of a "non scalpel" vasectomy? I'm due to have it done in May.

Yes, that is what I had just over 2 weeks ago. Basically they make one hole rather than two slits.

Well....

The actual vasectomy wasn't horrific although I got myself pretty worked up about it. You leave your dignity at the door, pull down your pants and lay on the bed whilst a doctor fondles your balls. They then inject a local into your sack and ask if you can feel him pinching it. Hopefully you cannot. Not really sure what happened next, but I think they make a puncture hole and pull out one of the tubes, which they then cut and seal it. He then moved onto the otherside via the same hole. I felt it a bit so had another shot of local which removed all feeling. Bit of tugging, bit of burning and it was all done. You jump up gingerly, where a nurse asked me to pull up my pants and she wrapped a bit of cotton gauze around the base of shaft/ball sack.

Off into a side room where I sat for about half an hour or so, not ashamed to admit I had a few tears. Found it a hugely emotional/psychological thing. Had a biscuit and some coffee and felt a bit better. Got a talk from nurse about how to continue to use protection till sample is clear in 4 months or so (the last thing I wanted to do at this point was think about sex).

Recovery was good for first few days, but then I picked up the flu that has been doing the rounds for last few weeks, which really slowed down my recovery. My body couldn't cope with both. The actual recovery from the op would have been fine without the flu I think. As it is the wound has taken longer than I expected to heal, although it is almost there. I still have a small looking hole where they went in, but it's mostly healed over now. One key thing to point out is that it heals from the inside, so looks worse than it is. I've also been super paranoid about it getting infected, and the healing process does make it look infected, but unless it is red/throbbing/smelly it isn't. It has a white looking head on the wound, but it's is just the process.

Pain wise, it has mostly been okay. Very little pain for the first few days, when I was taking Ibuprofen and paracetamol every 2hrs (alternating) and wearing 2 x pants. I then got cocky (when the illness mentioned above really hit) and I wasn't taking anything, I'd also gone back to 1 x pants. This was a mistake. About 4/5 days afterwards the bruising hit. They didn't go black or anything, they just hurt. A dull ache as if I'd been kicked in the balls. I upped the tablets again and that got it under control. After about 8/9 days the pain had mostly gone, although I was in 2 x pants still. After about 10 days I was mostly back to normal, although the wound was a little tender, and I was still paranoid.

This last weekend was when I felt mostly better, which was 2 weeks. Just 1 x pants, no pain. I was able to go back to normal walking (10000 steps a day) opposed to the 2/3000 I had been doing. I feel like I could start running again now but am going to wait till this weekend (which will be 3 weeks) and cycling I'll probably give the full 4 weeks as they recommend. Sex wise, I waited 2 weeks till I did anything. There was no blood in my stuff, which I had read about and stupidly told my other half about, so she didn't want anything to do with it till she knew the coast was clear (trying not to be too crude). The coast was clear so we...well you know....the other night, which was 2 weeks and 2 days afterwards. It felt mostly normal, bar the wound site which was a little tender. There was some ball pain afterwards, probably from the movement but that went pretty quickly.

I'm now 2 weeks and 4 days and feel pretty much normal. I'd not want to squash them much still at the moment (if that makes sense) as they are still a little tender, but it isn't having a hugely negative impact on my life right now, except the lack of exercise (I tend to do a fair bit). We've now got to "clear the pipes" 23 more times between now and mid May which I'm looking forward to smile

Would I have it done again? Honestly, probably not just because I found the whole thing so hard to deal with mentally, however I'm already starting to see the benefits. Knowing that we can have sex without any concern is a massive turn on for both and we're both looking forward to that.

Sorry for my ramblings, and if a bit too crude.

Its amazing the difference between procedures before and after dependent on the surgeon.

I was in and out in 25 minutes, I remember walking out the of building like John Wayne. No waiting in another room post op, I was literally in and out.

I went in bang on time so was very happy with that, we had a quick chat about the procedure and then he said pull your pants down and lie on the bed. I felt the needle and with in 2 minutes I felt my left tube being cut. I said to the doctor I felt that and he said don't worry, after that I didn't feel a thing.

I only had the 1 cut in the middle and didn't know it was the non scalp method.

After the op I went home and sat watching TV for the rest of the day and even though It wasn't pain it was a discomfort and I even remember saying I am going to watch the football tomorrow (op was Friday, footy was on the Saturday) I woke up Saturday morning and nope I couldn't go due to discomfort. I had booked the week off and during that week I was in discomfort (not pain) and it was always the left side where I felt that initial cut.

I went back to work on week 2 but took it easy, work was ok with this. I am now nearly at the end of week 4 and I cant even tell I have had it done.
