Depends on strength and age and injury history. 5 heavy sets is a lot if you’re anyway near your strength potential.

You’ll need a cafe if you’re going to do heavy back squats close to failure.
Agreed. In fact, sometimes I'll choose the cafe and not do the squats at all!

Oh.
Cage.
Cafes are also good. You’ll probably find a spotter and a nice cup of tea for when you’re done.

I'd had a bash at this before, but recently started again as I wanted to compliment my cardio with some good old fashioned strength work.

All going well so far having started week 7. Surprised that I got through a 40kg OHP, stalled on 37.5kg before, but tomorrow will see if I can crack 42.5kg. - Stats so far.

Squat - 65kg
Bench - 42.5kg
BOR - 52.5kg
OHP - 40kg
DL - 75kg

Body Weight - 76kg

As expected, failed on 42.5kg this morning. I knew it was coming but still disappointing.

We all fail at some point. It just makes the times when we do get those new PB's all the sweeter. smile

Indeed. In may ways, failure signals the start of the fun and rewarding stuff.

Yeah, I know. Didn't help that I had to get the bar to chest from the floor as the rack was being use.

Clean and Press, mush better for you than just O/H Press.

Yeah, but a waste of energy.

I agree. MY presses always go up much easier when I C+P as opposed to just lifting off the squat rack

I don't think so, they engage a hell of a lot more than just shoulders. When I write down 5x5 routines for my son and step-son, I use C&P instead of just Press.

Not for me - strict press. So today I had to get it to the chest then get organised, if you know what I mean, then press.

You can do what you like - free world and all that - but if you're looking to constantly optimise a lift, you should do that lift. Not another lift in advance of it too.

Not necessarily. Optimising one lift can often be advanced by super-setting with an explosive/plyo movement , or antagonist movement.

Yeah, but with super-setting you'd use the minor lift to exhaust the primary; not the other way round! tongue out

hehe Big difference. I have push pressed 100kg, but C&P 90 and not more than that yet. Am trying to work up to clean and push press for 100kg - I love the feeling of picking the weight up from the floor and it ending up over my head, and then back down again. (That's when I don't pass out, of course..) hehe

I don't superset myself with the bber way, but for fibre recruitment. Say, jumps and squats. When I clean, I find my back has fired up to be more solid than lifting straight off the rack. THis might not be the case for everyone, but I think it ties into no. 8 from here.

can't copy and paste but says can get a more powerful muscular response from the second exercise.
I do do both though, when pressing, for variation to cover all bases.

Unless you’ve got very strong shoulders, you’ll power clean your pressing weight with ease! I suck at power cleans, never do them, and can still clean vastly more than I can press. I could even when I was OK at pressing (bodyweight or so).

The power clean will also fire up your CNS a bit, I guess, which may help slightly with the subsequent press. Mostly, though, it’s just more badass. If you don’t have to use a rack, don’t - get the weight to your chest the old-fashioned way. It’s an opportunity to practice something explosive.
