26 which suggests I'm overweight. 6' tall and 13st 8lb. I do lots of trail running and my legs are where most of my weight is. A little bit around the middle I wouldn't mind losing, but only a little.
When I go for my medical each year the doc spouts off that I'm overweight. I then ask her/him where am I carrying the extra weight? Cos if it's muscle you can go swing. They generally don't have an answer.
I then ask them to come and join me for a 10 hour run through the jungle. No-one has taken me up on that offer yet.

BMI is a load of bks.
I wouldn't say it's bks, however it's designed for the average person, i.e. someone fairly sedentary. It's not for people who actually exercise, so complaining that it doesn't work for those people is pointless. Also, the target should be the upper end of the range, around 22-23 is reckoned to be ideal; towards the underweight end is less healthy.

Doesn't your doc do a body fat % as well as your weight? When I go for my medical each year the doc spouts off that I'm overweight. I then ask her/him where am I carrying the extra weight? Cos if it's muscle you can go swing. They generally don't have an answer.

Presumably, your extra weight is "around the middle" and then spread over your body.
It's still possible to be fit and a bit fat. I saw a fat guy running the other day who was clearly overweight, he was going at quite a fast pace, I assumed he was doing intervals but kept going for miles.
Running for 10 hours through the jungle is pretty amazing though.

Notice most of the people saying its bks are the ones with the high BMIs Also, the target should be the upper end of the range, around 22-23 is reckoned to be ideal; towards the underweight end is less healthy.
For people who are athletic you really need some kind of fat measurement as BMI only covers weight.

5ft6/7 and 9st1 gives me a BMI of 20.5 or so. My scale also gives me an approx body fat measurement of 11%. Says I can go below 9 stone and still remain healthy, though would probably have to start shopping in the kids section for clothes...
As a runner, I'm happy with my power to weight ratio but have always felt I'm still a touch too heavy to be truly efficient at the marathon.

That looks like a sneaky way for the NHS to survey the nation's kids! You can get the BMI number without telling them your kids' dates of birth, height, and weight here:

For what it's worth, mine is 26 (170, 75) which is 'overweight' - pretty laughable if you saw me.

BMI, what a complete pile of steaming...
According to that my ideal weight is 7st 13lb - 10st 11lb. The last time I can remember being within that band is early teenage years to early twenties. I just asked my wife about that, she thought the later number was optimistic, her response to the first number was to laugh and say I'd look anorexic!

BMi doesnt work except for average build, im 6ft, 17st 7lb having lost a stone, but my chest is all bone, about 48" not some pidgeon wreck carcass, i have been 15st 6lb and that was it, never being less (without collapsing)
my Bmi now is 33
As a diabetic its blood sugar i fight, mines down to 6.7 or 49 (Hba1)
gym 5 mornings a week but anything other than bikes/rowing/treadmill (cardio) means my weight wont drop as i just build muscle

I don't actually know my weight (!) as I ain't got no scales (poor person) but I have to watch my weight as I'm disabled and any excess weight is VERY bad for me as far as walking goes. The last time I was weighed I was 12 stone 3 and I'm 6 foot (if I can stand up straight ). According to the BMI thing that would be 23.something so the high middle of healthy.Yet everyone says I'm thin... My waist is 30" and that's the thing I go by - if my belt gets tight then I know I've put weight on.

Well that would make sense since the bottom number is borderline anorexic...According to that my ideal weight is 7st 13lb - 10st 11lb. Do you obese (muscular or very tall) people who think BMI is bks because you "look fine", actually check your % body fat?
There seems to be a lot of very heavy but powerfully built pistonheaders
Yes. BMI says I need to lose 10kg, yet my body fat % suggests that if I lose 6kg, I'll have the fat levels of an Olympian There seems to be a lot of very heavy but powerfully built pistonheaders
Realistically, I could do with losing 3kg, all fat. I'm well on the way, though, as I'm still getting back to full fitness after a broken shoulder-blade last year. That 3kg would see my body fat at about 20% (better than 'Good' but not quite 'Excellent') yet my BMI would still suggest I was "overweight". Go figure...
