As predicted, down to 97.8kg this morning, had quite a light BJJ session in the end so not the usual dehydrated loss (not that it makes any difference long term).

I was having a discussion with my wife regarding weight any my inability to maintain a steady level. This is something I really really need to work on if I am going to be successful. To give you an example:

Age 19, moved in with first proper girlfriend, weight increased to 17, possibly 18st
Age 20, split up with said girlfriend, hit the gym etc. weight down to 15st 5lb ish.
Age 22, met my wife, manual job, weight around 15st 5lb.
Age 23, daughter born, switched to a desk based job, weight increased to 19st over 12 - 14 months
Age 25, getting married, still in a desk job but took up running, weight down to 15st 5lb ish again, (still have my wedding to suit, it fits now which is my current weight
Age 27, injured foot running, 9 month lay off, weight piled back on to 19st 13lb (heaviest I've ever been) didn't get back into running frown
Age 29, Decide its time to do something about my weight, back in the gym and doing lots of spinning, weight down to 14st 4lb (lightest I've ever been)
Age 31, carry on at the gym but diet goes out of the window, build lots of muscle but weight creeps back to 17st 13lb frown
Age 31, join PH Phatfighters Q1 challenge, weight down to 15st 7lb.,

Obviously this is not healthy or something I can envisage my body handling long term. My problem is first, when I fall of the wagon, I really fall off. Secondly, I don't have an off switch for sweet foods...I either eat none at all....or I eat until I feel sick frown Chocolate is super addictive for me.

Not entirely sure what help this is to everyone else, but it's useful for me to take ownership of my own issues and be honest. Quite ashamed of being the sort of person who would hide wrappers out of embarrassment at how much I ate and the type of food. For someone usually in control of most aspects of their life, its a difficult thing to swallow (pardon the pun).

I think I may live to regret this but I'm here, all 111.7 kgs of me.

Background: age 67, retired motoring journalist. I had radiotherapy for prostate cancer a couple of years ago and had three stents fitted to unblock heart arteries last July. Also have joint problems: shoulder, knees, fingers - in all a bit of a wreck. Annoying thing, until I was 63 I'd never been in a hospital, now I sometimes feel I live in them...

I need to lose weight, get fit and stay fit; not the least because my partner is 15 years younger than me and I'd like to be around a long while longer for her.

So... I can't run due to knee problems, have a bicycle I haven't ridden for ten years, often feel tired due to heart medication, hate water having nearly drowned as a nipper (so no swimming!) but there are some good walks locally (Chesterfield) and I wondered about geo-caching as an incentive to get me out more.

I don't smoke (gave up decades ago), have a bottle of red over a weekend and nothing during the week, love cooking so have reduced ready meals/processed food but still need to get a grip on portion sizes. Have strong willpower except when there are Chocolate Hobnobs within reach - biscuits can only be eaten in three's...

Target weight.... um... let's say 90kg which according to my app (I wear a Mi Band 2) puts me in the middle of 'Overweight' - 81kg is the upper limit for 'Normal'.

Pete, I am bit like you, I have made a commitment to weigh myself almost every day for as long as I live, I find it stops me going off track, a 2 pound change you wont really notice in your clothes, think we then put a stone on, then subconsciously change the clothes, before we know it, its two stone.

Its not a big commitment, I know this morning I am 14 st 9, ok, not great but I want to see it drop, when I get to my target weight, I dont want to stop as I know it will creep back and not planning on repeating.

It is one of the most important stats about our health, us chaps like numbers and stats, I plan to get to say 13 7 and then operate in a four pound window, we need to be rigorous if we want to be slim and fit, I think we assume slim/it people naturally are but I suspect in the main, most work bloody hard at it, but we dont see that, just the end result.

You can do it, losung a bit of podge must be a hell of a lot easier than what you have been through by the sound
of it.

Dont buy Chocolate Hobnobs, if they arent there, you cant eat them, if they are there, they are sentient and will call to you, like Sirens calling Sailors to their fate, some things are too delicious to exist, you can have them when you are at target, or maybe just one two "if it fits you Macros", I used to fill up on them, lethal, six or seven with a brew, feel full then an hour or two later, starving, that is like a masterclass in how to gain fat.

Drag the bike out, get it fettled, give it a try, its all small moves int he right direction, my dad is 69 and rides, on tracks and pavements round Manchester Airport ever couple of days, he loves it, does him good, dont ever think too old, too this, too that, like the Nike slogan, "JUST DO IT"

Lose that weight and you will feel years younger, honestly the denial and effort reward in spades, just be consistent, have faith, wait a little while and you will notice, I know Hobnobs reward now, instant gratification, but the really good stuff in life all takes time, but you know that having been around a while !

best of luck !

My main thing is if its in the house, I eat it. Usually quite quickly and in one go.

If its not in the house I don't eat it or even crave it.

Works quite well for me to date :-)

Weirdly I sort of go the other way, funny fked-up permutations of the human brain seem to make panic-buying an unavoidable component of eating my own weight in chocolate: having some in the house and knowing it's there means I go for the odd few squares but very seldom come to having absentmindedly eaten a few hundred grams of the stuff.

I've worked out that in any given week I consume around 6000 calories just by snacking on crisps, chocolate and caffeine, with minimal exercise. It isn't a lot of physical food, one bar and one bag per day plus 2-4 cups of tea with sugar, but still I was quite shocked by this, down to my own ignorance mainly and probably goes a long way to explaining my recent weight gain. I also often have second portions and load up the plate a bit too much. It all stops today now Easter is over.

So cutting out that (I don't rely on any of it, including caffeine.. I just like it) and running for 45 minutes 3 times a week, I'm hoping to drop a stone by mid June. Sound achievable? Current weight 14 stone 0 pounds. Being 5'7 and 30 I'm a bit on the chubby side at that weight. I feel stodgy and lethargic most days and I know at 30, I shouldn't feel like I'm 80. So I'm in.

You need to work out your BMR you need per day and then aim under that. According to the below its approx 1800.

https://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calculat...

Approx (I think this is still genuinely believed) a 3500cal defecit gives 1lb of weight loss. So if you can do that per week you will have it done in 14wks. Obviously amp it up as required. Get on a calorie logger (I use myfitnesspal) and be absolutely religious about logging things. The weight should fall off if you keep the defecit - its impossible not to.

good luck!

Well....Easter has proven to be....difficult lol.

Slipped back into that habit of not tracking my food and generally eating things I shouldn't have...in quantities I know are wrong.

Had family days out Friday, Saturday and Sunday making it quite difficult to eat sensibly (read not at all) - Obviously I could have taken prepared food etc. but I didn't, lesson learned.

Scales have taken a quite drastic turn from 97.4kg up to 99.3kg this morning! Hopefully a proportion of this is bloat and water retention but if it isn't then I have some work to do! Sub 97kg is beginning to look like a stumbling block which I need to knuckle down and get past.

Well and truly back on the wagon today, greek yoghurt and pistachio's for breakfast, decent chest / cardio gym session, salmon and broccoli for lunch alongside a protein bar. Sensible dinner tonight and see what tomorrow brings.

Not sure how my diet is going this week, currently in Tokyo on holiday so the beer consumption seems to be balanced by the 30k steps a day I'm averaging...

Food seems to be managed well too, naturally not too bad for you (ramen &a sushi out staple mostly plus meat skewers) although some things make you a little more cautious!

Some of the "cuts" are questionable and that's before you've got to whale/horse etc...let's take pork:

In addition, can I recommend IIYFM as this may suit your approach.

Excellent calculator on their site that is very information rich; https://www.iifym.com/iifym-calculator/

Well progress has been excellent for me over the past couple of months (from 38 waist down to a slack 34) and approx 2 stone of fat loss.

I'm using IIYFM (I paid for the blue print diet); https://www.iifym.com/iifym-calculator/

My approach is to diet on 2,600 calories a day with a protein goal of 220-250g per day.

I track foods on my phone using the excellent MyFitnessPal; https://www.myfitnesspal.com/

And then activity tracking with my watch that measures heart rate, heat, movement, steps and exercises etc. It also uploads to Strava. The watch isn't required but it is very useful for tracking everything and the Garmin app puts all of the data together in the excellent iOS/Android apps; https://buy.garmin.com/en-GB/GB/p/552982

Anyway, that's my 2p and I enjoy the diet as it allows me to eat some rubbish foods as long as I hit the protein goal and stay under my calorie goal.

smile

Thinking about eating pork 'large intestine' - that's got to be pretty errrr piquant - is a great way to decrease your appetite… hurl

I'm back from holiday so will start working on a weekly update tonight. Can someone give me pointers on how I can upload pictures so they are viewable here? I looked at the formatting for tables directly in a post and it looks like a right old faff, so my plan was to take screenshots and post them up on a image hosting site.

I expect my weight to have gone up quite a lot when I weight in tonight - I've drunk alcohol every day since last monday. And been free and easy with snacks. I was on holiday, I worked towards it knowing that would happen so i know its coming. it will be interesting to see how much has gone on though.

And this weekend my sister-in-law is staying over with her husband and baby, so i'll be drinking to cope with that rofl

Heres the first update. I'm a bit dissapointed to have put on 3.4Kg in the last 10 days, but like i said above it was all planned in really.

I've made a table and a chart to track everyones progress.

Colour coding:

1) Orange in either starting weight or target weight means you haven't stated that info yet.
2) Red/green in last update column is whether you have updated thread in last 14 days.
3) Read/green in loss/gain columns...obvious!

The graph shows your loss/gain versus time as a percentage of your target loss amount (e.g taking J4CKOs numbers he wants a total loss of 7.7KG and has currently managed 0.5KG, so he's at 6% loss so far). The dashed line indicates the rate you need to lose at to hit your target by the end of the quarter. If your line is above the dash, you are ahead of target, if you're below you are behind schedule. Pete102 and Fredastaire must try harder!

The big chart might get a bit busy to pick out your trend - if you want your own plotted thats fine, tip me the wink. In the meantime, I've also added a mini trendline for each persons weight in the table.

Let me know if you have troubles with legibility and I'll increase the size of the text, or change colours as necessary.

Pete, you sound like me, Mr Yo-yo, up and down.

I've gradullally crept back up to 17st now at 5ft 8. Tuesday was the last straw when I had to buy a new pair of 38" waist trousers and a XL Tshirt, so Mission Lose The Gut has commenced, I had actually joined Slimming World last week, not going to follow it to the letter, but there is some good ideas there. It's mainly the motivation that I am getting weighed in front of people every week and I want to lose weight not put on is a good incentive.

Wednesday 6am run and another one today which was a little further, so onward and upwards, might get some new running trainers to perk my interest even more!

Good luck everyone and I'll report back shortly!

Fred, amazing spreadsheet skills! Nice work.

I've got the dieticians and their fancy scale round next Monday. That'll be a day short of 4 weeks of fairly careful calorie-counting, less 2 days (the two very low dots on the scale) where I was away from home & celebrating my little sister's birthday and then Passover.

Hopefully I didn't manage to undo an entire month with one afternoon of delicious sugary things. (Her chosen 30th birthday celebration was the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory-themed afternoon tea at One Aldwych. It was incredible.)

Without any meaningful capacity to exercise, it's all about the calories. Longer term I need to figure out how to do celebrations without going overboard - definitely a work in progress.
