Whopping cough when young. Nearly killed me. My parents were told to prepare themselves. When I recovered they were told I'll always have problems and might not be able to run and play like others. I'm 6'3" and was something of a sprinter over 200m due to my inability to start. I'm 17 stone and not the weakling the doctors suggested I would be.

They were right though: I was generally no good at sport. I was on the wing for rugby but always got injured once the opponents realised how fast I was. I was good at stick and ball games.

My gran sat at the side of my bed all through the critical phase of over a week, only getting up to relieve herself and then only when there was someone else to take her chair. I became her favourite. I was, according to her, 'that bugger who scared me so much I'll be put in my grave sooner than I should be'. She lived to her 90s.

At the end of August last year I set fire to myself whilst trying to light a BBQ and suffered extensive burns to arms, chest and face, including my eyes. I......

......Moral of the story; next time you are temped to use an accelerant to help light a BBQ (white spirits in my case), just remember that the consequences can be an awful lot worse than singed eyebrows.
Holy plucking phuck! We have a winner! yikes

My worst nightmare, catching fire. I've watched some of those burning to death videos, like some macabre ghoul, horrified, yet interested, torturing my imagination....

Head injury a couple of years ago. Made me realise I'm not immortal. Thankfully no (or very few) long term effects. Now aged 32 and changing my attitude to life.

How long did it take you to recover if it's not a rude question? My brother had a fairly serious head injury about a month ago, he's already made excellent progress but is still prone to confusion and agitation when tired and his short term memory is not great.

Broken right arm when I was about 14. Playing football at lunchtime at school, I got hacked and went down hard.

The day after my cast came off I was playing football at lunchtime, got hacked and went down hard. Broke the fker again!laugh

Age 16 working in my dads garage we had a VW beetle engine on an A frame. The rope snapped and the engine landed on my foot from about 3 feet(no pun intended). For those that don't know, beetle engines have heat exchangers on either side of the engine. The seam is like a blunt knife. Went to hospital and 3 of my toes were black and swollen. The sick bds burned through my toenails with what looked like a soldering iron with no anaesthetic! The most painful thing I have ever experienced.

Age 21 I got smacked in the face, full pelt with a crow bar. I got knocked out cold. When I woke up I looked in the mirror and I could wiggle around 3 of my teeth. My upper jaw was broken. Yeah, that wasn't fun!laugh

Take your pick from those. None are nearly as bad as mike though. fk me that's horrific! Glad you're mended though!beer

Heavy benching (160 or 165, can't recall) and dropped the weight on my chest, it hyper-extended my left arm and ripped my chest muscles/tendons off.

Mine was in a car crash at Le Mans in 2006, at which point I'd never heard of Pistonheads. In trying to find any information regarding the crash online, I stumbled over a PH forum where the crash was being discussed. Very strange to read, especially when someone said 'the guy had died apparently'. WTF! I signed up to PH and said 'Im not dead yet!'
Anyway, injuries were: smashed hip socket, compound fracture left arm, 3 broken ribs, jaw in 3 pieces, both lungs punctured, 3 stomach injuries, pin through knee, emergency tracheotomy, a lot of missing teeth and eventually 12 pints of your finest French blood.
All in all 9 days coma and 63 intensive care. 43 screws now hold my face together and a plate with 6 screws in my arm. AND NO I DO NOT fkING BLEEP AT THE AIRPORT!!

Reading this I feel incredibly fortunate.

Never broken a bone. Other than colds only ever had a mild dose of chicken pox.

Cut a knee once that required a few stiches & cut open the underside of a little toe that need 3 stiches. That's it.

That was pretty much my story too Rob, then I did a lot of catching up all in one go!

I get asked that too lol. The time in Intensive Care suggests to me that was worse than it sounds, and it sounds terrible.

I'd never broken anything until I was 37 when one day I was ambling along in my TVR (which I'd had over 8 years) and met someone who'd been in France the day before so forgot which side of the road to be on. Head on, combined speed estimated at 80. I don't remember it, or much for the next 2 weeks while in ITU.

Despite wearing a seat belt I hit my head pretty badly and the front was 'like crazy paving' as one Dr said; some brain damage at the front which means I'm crap at some functions, like facial recognition, and at the back where my brain rebounded against my skull which affected my vision for a while. The impact made a 1.5cm hole in my sinus from which CSF would leak and fractured C5 slightly.

The seat belt probably caused the perforated ileum, torn liver and mesenteric artery, but the worst issue was a 'burst fracture' of vert L1, which had to be replaced, and some paralysis as a result.

Which is why my friends call me Sticks smile

That's nasty. Apart from a scar through my bottom lip, chin and arm you'd never know what I've been through. And the difference that would have been life changing or even death could just have been 1 second earlier/later or 1mm closer etc.

Bloody hell, that must have been horrendous. It's probably a blessing that you don't tend to remember the time spent in ITU, not sure how much of that is down to drugs or just the mind blanking things out but I only have quite hazy memories of the first week I was in.

I just had more time to forget what happened and still don't remember even now. Went out for an omelette and remember no more! Whereas you are still living it now. You have my sympathies my friend.

Yes, probably best. I did try and get up and go home apparently and I remember the nurses were called Justice, and Onya. Good not to remember the accident though, I enjoy driving still.

Because I subsequently have routine check ups, last year a tumour was spotted on my kidney at an early stage, before I had any symptoms. Had I not had the scan, the outcome could've been very different. So you can never tell.
