I had a TIA (mini stroke) last month, age 46. Just felt like a trapped nerve in my neck that then progressed down my left side. i went to bed for half hour then found I couldn't walk, legs felt like i was on a bouncy castle. A&E were great, i had blood pressure of 235/135 & it turns out i had a blocked artery in the back of my neck, thankfully as im pretty fit the other 3 arteries compensated for the blood loss in my brain so i was ok after a few hours. Admitted to the stroke ward for 3 days but all good now.

No driving for a month but im back to normal now, on blood pressure tablets but that's nice & low so back to normal. It was probably caused when i fell off a bike (BMX) & landed on my right shoulder a week or so before so hopefully as long as i don't fall again it shouldn't happen again.

A month ago i could do anything, i was immortal, run for miles, ride bikes as long as i liked, suddenly i feel a bit vulnerable, as though my armour had been pierced & theres nothing i could do to stop it. Im fine now & again back to running & riding but you always have in the back of your mind that it could happen & thats not very nice.

All the best mate & do what ever the Dr's tell you to do!

Hi Ash,

Thanks for the reply - glad you are back to your normal self.

I was tying to get the new seats in my Westfield at the time so was bent over and folded around the roll cage.

What did they end up doing to your heart in the end, how long was the he recovery from when you had the stoke/ surgery?

Did you have any restrictions on driving other than the initial month?
Ah okay so yeah potentially some sort of pressure related thing I guess!

They gave me a bovine pericardial patch. Which as far as I can tell is just a bit of cow heart sewn over the hole! They also gave me some new valves while I was under as had issues with those from birth too.

My recovery was probably 1 month of intense recovery and then like 6 to be back to normal. Are they going open on yours and splitting your sternum? That was really the only bad bit because you have a weird feeling that you're going to accidentally fold your chest in half (even though you can't). Honestly it wasn't that bad really. Just find a couple of books you want to read or shows you want to catch up on and get used to sleeping on your back. If I can do it anyone can!

Nope! Absolutely no restrictions mate. I'm a regular at the Nurburgring now with no issue smile

Just try not to let it get you down! Best of luck mate.

Don't suppose you have critical illness cover do? The only reason I ask is so many people have these illnesses and forget to claim.
