Whats the deal with going out for a Curry???

I know its crazy - but is it possible??
At a guess no rice no Naan, and hard to track your macros .

Chicken tikka kebab tomorrow for me, minus the Naan , weigh the chicken and salad lol

I would live off curry if I could.

For keto steer clear of rice, naan, potato etc.

Also go easy on sweet and thick sauces, as even a savoury curry will have a lot of onion in it, which is pretty carby.

Lowest carb would be a dry meat dish eg shashlik or tandoori, and you could add salad or a fairly dry veg curry. I tend to go for okra, mushroom or cauliflower bhaji if I want a side dish.

Getting more into it - got a reasonable measure on it now smile

Made this the other night - to go with Mexican egg breakfast

Keto Guacomole

170g steamed Broccoli
100g steamed Kale
220g Avocardo (2 avocardos)
Lime Juice (1 lime)
100g White onion diced
1 Red chilli finely chopped

Steam the Kale and Broccoli, blend it up with a dash of cider vinegar
Mash in the avocardo, mix in the onion and then finally the lime juice & chilli
Add some salt and pepper to taste

Makes 650grams - Keep in fridge.

Portion size = 65g (loads)

Calories = 49
Carbs = 4.6/ NET Carb 2.2g
Fat = 3.3g
Protein = 1.1g

Just need to make Keto crisps to have a great snack and or a Keto Chilli con Carne

Looks nice, might have to try that. I think keto chilli is just no rice/wraps (cauliflower rice instead) and plenty of sour cream and cheese isn't it? Just be a little careful with the kidney beans as the carbs rack up quickly with them.

6 weeks in and lost nearly a stone now. Not as quick weight loss as others have seen but a good steady amount each week.

Got myself a decent rotation of meals, and I can really tell if I go over my carbs one day by how I’m feeling.

Not really been craving sweet stuff, and not had a drink since Boxing Day. Still another stone and half to go so will keep at it.

An earlier question about carbs on labels - you are able to subtract the carbs from fibre as your body doesn’t digest those. However Uk food labels already take that into account, whereas US food labels don’t. That’s why if you watch American YouTube videos etc they talk about subtracting carbs from fibre etc to get net carbs. Using Uk food labels that’s already been done. It can get confusing if you’re using fitness/food trackers like my fitness pal as the example foods jump between US and UK. You may already be aware of all that, but in case anyone is not!

I didn’t know that about the UK carbs and fibre content. It hasn’t made much difference to me but I know some people are more sensitive than others to the carbs.

I’m just eating low carb at the moment (not counting carbs but generally avoiding the sugars and startches) and still showing purple on the Ketostix. Protein is now up around 140g a day and again that also seems to make no difference - total calories are about 2500 and my weight is steady.

I can recommend this Keto friendly pudding to anyone with a sweet tooth. It’s not 10/10 but it satisfies me if I ever get the urge for something sweet;

1/3 Double cream
1/3 Mascarpone
1/3 Cream cheese
1 or 2 egg yolks (raw)
Sweetener to taste
Vanilla essence

Whisk until stiff, chill and eat.

Optional (mix and match):
Dark chocolate shavings
Cocoa powder
Orange essence
Almond essence
Rum or brandy
Ground desiccated coconut

Ill have to try that it looks good!

I’ve tried a mug cake once or twice; using almond and coconut flour. It’s not carb free but if I’ve had a focused day I can squeeze it in as a treat.

I’ve found my taste buds have massively changed though, and anything remotely sweet is very very sickly now. Only thing I’ve been missing is crisps, and a cheeky filthy dominos.

If you are getting an acetone taste or you suspect bad breath, it is because you are transitioning and only part burning some of your fats. The ketones come out in your breath. Get some sugar free gum and drop the carbs further.

I'm sure you already know, but I'll mention it anyway in case anyone else benefits.

Sugar free does not mean carb free!

Of course, they replace the sugar with various sweeteners, not all of which are carb free. Commonly in gum/sweets these sweeteners are sugar alcohols which can, in some people, halt or stop ketosis.

You can check the GI of various sweeteners here:

http://www.sugar-and-sweetener-guide.com/glycemic-...

Anecdotally, different keto dieters report being able to tolerate different sweeteners. Some stay in ketosis no matter which sweeteners they eat, and others claim to be kicked out of ketosis by even 0 GI sweeteners (and there's some evidence that even a sweet taste can trigger an insulin response, so it's not that crazy). Basically, be careful because you gotta find what works for you. I found it very hard to do this scientifically because there are so many other factors in a day that it's hard to tell what the true effect is.

Whilst we're on sweets...i've been on Keto since 1st Jan and lost 8kg. I've been incredibly disciplined about it and am happy with my progress so far.

Come summer i'm going to be back out in my glider for extended periods. I normally take a bag of boiled sweets with me for sustenance - blackcurrant liquorice, Werther's originals or similar. Space is at a premium and it gives me something to suck on (fnar fnar).

I'd welcome any suggestions for alternates, would sugar free boiled sweets work?

need to watch how many artificial sweetened sweets you have, too many have a somewhat laxative effect. Boiled eggs, olives, cheese? Pepperoni sticks, dried beef?

Biltong, peperoni and - my new favourite - dried Chorizo all work OK, I just prefer something sweet. Tricky one...

No point torturing yourself - get off the sugar and stay off it.

Macademia nuts, cheese, avocados, boiled eggs. Better still, eat bigger meals and don't snack; you aren't up there for months at a time. Are you?

Next question - once you hit target weight what's a good way of staying there? What sort of daily "carb intake" is wise? I've been working to 20g/day at the minute, what can I realistically increase this to?

Does anyone include a small alcoholic treat on the ketogenic diet?

I’m wondering if my one gin and slimline a week is enough to trip me out of ketosis.

Meal wise I’m mostly sticking to what I ate before but swapping the carbs for watercress or rocket.

Eating a lot of venison, chicken and tuna steaks.
I use fresh chili, ginger and garlic for flavouring and a drizzle of soy or balsmaic (not the thick stuff) depending on the meal.
I’ve also made some lovely curry’s from scratch without adding lots of onion and unnessecary fat.

Where I’m struggling is when I visit a friends for lunch or a parents for dinner I can’t turn my nose up at what I’m being offered.
Everyone knows the sit I’m on but doesn’t quite understand it.
I just make sure I’m stricter after but it has resulted in a week when I only lost 1lb which for how restrictive the diet is, isn’t good at all!

I’m onto my 6th week now and have dropped 17lbs in total.
I wanted to lose 40lbs in total.

To add - generally the diet isnt making me miserable like some diets can, as I’m not hungry.

I’m aiming to drink 3 litres of water a day which I also think helps.

I miss the enjoyment I got from sharing a bottle of red at the weekend and just roasting a crumpet for a change

Generally speaking, no, one keto-friendly alcoholic drink will not kick you out of ketosis, but any alcohol consumed WILL be burned for energy before getting back to burning fat. So think of keto-friendly drinks more in terms of calories than carbs. You could enjoy a whisky by the fire with your other half, or you could burn another few hundred calories today. There's no right answer, just a personal choice to make.

Everyone is different and the general advice I have seen is to gradually ramp it up until you start gaining then keep it at just below that level
