3 month update - 3 stone down!

I had what felt like a massive plateau a few weeks ago, although with hindsight it wasn't a big deal. Approx 3 weeks where weight didn't go down at all, even went up a tiny bit despite eating the same as previously and doing a couple of fast days to try and jump-start it.
I decided the real problem was that I was checking the scales too often, so have stopped doing that - at some point it started moving again as I've lost lots more since then.

Question for anyone that knows - Are there any types of beef steak I can look for that are cheap and full of fat, while being available in fairly thick cuts? I find myself eating lots of ribeye, and always look for the fattiest one in the shop, but it's too expensive. Rump is cheaper but too lean. Other cheaper cuts are always too thin to be enjoyable.

Just embarking on this journey myself, I'm T2D and 17st so figured it was worth a try. Thought I'd kick it off with a 5 day water-only fast, which I'm just at the end of and has been an experience! BS down to a steady 4 and lost nearly a stone so all is good so far (although mainly water I'm guessing). Wife has also bought in to the Low Carb diet and seems to be enjoying it this week. Plenty of recipes on dietdoctor, but I'm not sure how I'm going to cope with no bread, potatoes or pasta frown
Good luck!
You honestly do lose your carb cravings - that's been the best thing about keto for me, as it was my biggest issue previously.

I'm not saying you shouldn't make it yourself... But why would you when Hellman's is full of fat and practically carb-free? I add it everywhere I can lick

It just tastes so much better! (Entirely my personal opinion if course) I use Groundnut Oil - make a batch and it lasts a week in the fridge.

The problem with the cheaper meats is they can be quite tough.

You could mince some of the cheaper cuts and hand form them into patties. Not quite as satisfying as a beautiful bit of rib eye cooked medium-rare...but could be worse!

Most of my keto diet is meat, cheese, eggs and tinned tuna, but for some reason I nearly bothered getting into eating more fish. That is until now! I bought some frozen haddock fillets from Sainsburys yesterday and have just nuked all 4 in the microwave for 5 mins at 950W (they were partially defrosted) and they've come out superb! Just finished wolfing them down with some mayo, salt and black pepper. lick Yum.

Has anyone ever tried that sugar-free Jell-o? It was recommended to me to have with soke double cream but let me tell you: don't bother! It is nasty and has no flavour whatsoever. It's like chewing a piece of rubber.

Don't back slap too much, anyone who's a long term low carber can tell you, it can be easy to fall off the wagon. Boredom usually does it. Five years of eating protein/fat etc can become a pita. It's important not to become a keto bore as well, yes we know you're five weeks in, your energy levels are amazing, clarity, blah blah, yep we get the idea.

Certainly is! Marinated in plenty of five spice and a tiny bit of honey (naughty), covered in salt and crisped to perfection! I have it with pak choi with garlic, soy sauce, sesame oil, sesame seeds, butter and more five spice. Yum.

Finished with raspberries, whipped double cream and grated 90% dark chocolate it’s hard to believe it’s a diet meal!

What sort of exercise are people doing on this diet? I've been doing it for two weeks now, and go in the gym 4 times a week to do weights. It's great, there has been no loss of strength or motivation. However, I went for a 20 mile bike ride (half the distance of what i was doing during the summer) this afternoon and with a couple of miles to go, it made me feel really weird! I felt lightheaded, my legs felt like I had pins and needles, and when i got off the bike, i felt like i was going to fall over!

I was on keto for about 6 weeks a couple of years ago and my strength fell off a cliff. Felt st in the gym and on the bike - massive difference, not to be repeated. I now have a perfectly balanced healthy diet - 81kg and strong as fk.

I now do 3 weights sessions and 1 HIIT session a week or 2 mountain bike rides a week. The first two weeks were utterly dreadful - no strength, no power and riding a bike up a hill was almost impossible. I even had palpitations on a bike ride on a hot day (not uncommon).

Ten weeks in and long cardio sessions are no longer a problem, HIIT is maybe slightly more difficult than it was with carbs in the diet and weights are back where they were.

So basically stick with it, it took me about six weeks before I could work out properly in the gym. No doubt if you’re working out for absolute performance then this would be the wrong diet, but for your average man it provides ample energy in the gym (although everyone is different and this diet really doesn’t seem to work for some people).

How long have you been doing it? It does take some time to adjust. It's probably not the right diet for a 100m sprinter but I find endurance stuff fine - your body is already burning fat anyway.

Just finished my first half marathon, 2:10. I’ve been following a Keto diet for a few years and have lost over 2 stone. Started runnning in Feb and haven’t don’t as much training as maybe I should have.

I must confess to feeling a little smug at not faffig about with gels and expensive sports drinks, fuelled only really by last night’s meatballs and cheese.

Sounds lovely. I’d have to avoid the honey and dessert though myself frown

Well since following the meal plans on Diet Doctor just over a month ago (with a week off in the middle due to a work trip abroad and then the odd cheat day) I've dropped 3.5KG. Haven't found it anywhere near as difficult to follow as previous attempts at low-fat/low-calorie diets either which is fantastic.

I'll be attempting to make Xmas as keto-friendly as possible, but I expect weight-loss to stall completely for the next couple of weeks laugh

I think I’m addicted to sugar mostly in the form of fruit but with some treats on top. I don’t drink soft drinks or have sugar in my drinks though. I’m also in okish shape at 80kg 5ft 11ins but have this unsightly fat on my hips just above my ass.

As a result I’m considering doing this in the new year. One of the things that concerns me is how much it may cost once I’ve bought all the bits I’d need plus I mostly don’t have access to an oven, only a slow cooker, microwave and two hobs.

I should probably add my experiences FWIW - have been low carbing/IF this year. Probably quite the bastardised form - most days eat nothing all day till evening dinner then all meat/veg, and snack on nuts or cheese if still hungry. Tend to have a couple of treat meals on the weekend - several pints and a curry - I swear the guy who brings carbless lager to market will die a trillionaire. Oh, and a few holidays have been all bets are off too.

I know this is not quite how the diets supposed to work, but in January I was pushing 18 stone and struggling to button up 36's, now I'm somewhat stagnating around 14.4 and the mrs just bought me the first pair of 32's I've worn in a long time.

There's a lot of people with a lot to say about all this low carb but I think people are all different and different things work for different people - I think I have a slow metabolism as being on my feet all day for 8 or 9 hours and not eating doesn't normally bother me. I don't have much of a sweet tooth most of the time either so that helps. YMMV.

Top tip - aubergine slices 1" thick, knob of butter on top and dusting of herbs or spices you like and baked for 20 mins is a nice bit of low carb stodge.

You don't need to buy anything other than your food. Pretty much everything can be done in the micro or on your hob. A gas hob is better than an electric one though. A couple of frying pans with lids will do what you need and I guess most households will have at least one frying pan already. smile

Thats the part I’m worried about! As an example I have a bowl of porridge most mornings with a large bag costing me £2 and lasts a month or so! The “Keto” breakfast will cost me more with the “Keto” porridge replacement being a mixture of chai, seeds etc which costs more again. I know I add milk/yogurt to the porridge but that’s £2 max a week.
