Personally I’ve never calculated any macronutrients, and my diet is incredibly varied. It just doesn’t contain any meaningful carbs. Fats and oils are a very necessary topic of discussion for anyone on a ketogenic diet, since it is their main source of energy.

hehe I thought I was clear; oils for (salad) dressings and fats for cooking.
I'm not sure I could 'glug' any oil, no matter how 'on-trend' it may be.

Yeah drinking oil is a bit outside my comfort zone, and I dream about dietary fat laugh

Big difference between eating high fat foods and chugging oil though. Same as bulletproof coffee, the keto equivalent of a donut, a whole lot of calories and minimal nutrients.
Unless you are trying to gain weight you should be eating whole foods and not chugging extracted fats.

Agreed. Each meal should ideally contain the whole balance. I think some people are taking this a bit out of context. The chugging oil and double cream thing is a snack. When faced with the choice of a quick clean energy boost from a pot of cream, or a slice of ham wrapped between two slices of whole grain glucose, it’s a bit obvious which option to choose if you’re on a ketogenic diet.

I’ve been keeping up with a keto diet on and off for maybe 4 months now and think my diet is fairly well balance, what doesn’t help anyone though is that there’s no comprehensive meal plans / lists / threads anywhere that show a good range of meals to get inspiration and guidance from.
The fact that fruit is generally off limits, as are a lot of vegetable means with the bar will in the world it is very difficult to keep every meal balanced

Yeah it can be very difficult to adjust after a lifetime of expecting meals to be filled-out with carbs. The secret really is to establish a list of effective ingredients, then get in the kitchen and get creative. I spend more time thinking about and preparing my meals than I do eating them. Proper nutrition is always at the forefront of my mind, yet you only have to mention the word ‘keto’ and everyone seems to snap to the default idea that you spend all day eating steak and eggs laugh

In fairness I can somewhat understand this when people are posting pictures of bottles of oil they drank for breakfast laugh

If you sign up for a free month, there are weeks and weeks of meal plans to get you going. I still go back to them for re-inspiration when I feel things are getting repetitive.

Also, these visual guides helped me enormously to get a mental picture of what to cook with:

I feel the time is right to restate my keto dietary goals once more biggrin

100% high quality whole foods. Everything prepared from these raw ingredients. No prepackaged meals. Ever. If I’m out and about and unexpectedly find myself needing more energy without a kitchen to hand, I’ll chug back a small pot of double cream.

Zero carbohydrates besides nuts and green vegetables. No counting necessary.
Counted protein, to avoid gluconeogenesis.
Unlimited fat. Satiety does the counting for me.

My diet contains everything needed for good health, and none of the things that turn my blood to syrup (T2 diabetic). There’s no magic bullet food that someone consumes, which contains something that someone else can’t get from something different. It is wrong to assume that those who choose the ketogenic lifestyle are ignorant to the importance of proper nutrition. In fact I would guess that most are more acutely aware of it than many of those on the regular “balanced” diet idea fed to them by industry influenced science wink

I'm trying to get back to Keto after straying into carby stuff recently. So I'm trying to consume extra fat right now for a few days to curb hunger and carb cravings. Then I dont plan on glugging oil willy nilly. It worked last time. I like nuts but thought the carbs in them are a no no. Is that a better option then just eating nuts instead of glugging oil / cream - or more specifically -

Can I eat nuts willy nilly to help get into a Keto state as I'm craving carbs and feeling hungry?

maybe not willy-nilly.. Nuts vary between 15 - 30% carb (walnuts are at the lower end, cashews the higher) but they do have a decent dose of fat in there.

I've been using Saucisse (or Pepperami or similar :Aldi and Lidle are great for snack-sized ones) and beef jerky. I also quite like the 'pork crunch' which are a variation on pork scratchings, not nearly as salty and more like crisps. There are some interesting variations including chilli ones, but these are good value as a starter: http://amzn.eu/5Ck032Q

I can't tell if you lot are joking or not... do I need a whoosh parrot here?

Glugging olive oil? Eating cream on its own (ok, Kenny was just proving a point about lactose content, but still....) Do these sound like balanced meals to you?

Nutrition, people! Don't forget about it. If you're sooooo focused on keto macros (short for macro-nutrients, remember) that you forget about the micro-nutrients, you're not going to be getting all the good stuff you need. You can't live on chicken breast, olive oil and broccoli alone. Cream is not a balanced breakfast.

Get some variety, and if you find you're chugging liquid fats just to satiate your hunger or hit your maintenance calories or to get some fuel for the day then STOP, take a good look at your shopping lists and meal plans, and have a word with yourselves.

The easiest way not to have to think about micronutrients is variety.
hehe

The cream was a gag - i do add it to coffee if i'm short on calories for the day though but that's because it's an easy way of getting calories without carbs or protein. I usually have cream and some berries for dessert, which is a great way of getting low carb calories.

The only things i don't eat are fruit (other than a few berries), sugar and below-ground veg. I eat masses of green veg and salad.

I've gone back to using MFP religously to track vitamins. I take a magnesium & calcium supplement and my potassium is usually a bit low so i need to find a source of that i think.

I'm usually at 1700-1900 calories/day. 6'4", 89kg now. Desk job but walk 3-4 miles/day and starting to do some free weights and rowing at the gym.

I assumed their whipped cream would be sweetened. My recent tipple has been the Cold Brew which can come with whipped cream but I go Black.
Yeah I did ask, it's 3% carbohydrate, 1.6g per 100 is sugar. So 50ml or so of cream is 0.8g which i can live with. thumbup

Double cream definitely better though!

No. Definitely not! Personally I only add the odd handful of almonds to fat-bomb smoothies. Sitting snacking on nuts, particularly cashews, will elevtate insulin secretion. Insulin is your keto-nemesis.

Nuts are generally fine in moderation but they’re most certainly on my amber watchlist smile

Not sure that's a great option. Listed in ingredients; wheat flour, hydrolysed vegetable protein, sugar and dextrose.

Watch the jerky too, some of them are surprisingly high in sugar - presumably from marinades

Pepperami is a tasty snack, but despite being “100% pork” are not 100% pork. They contain plenty of the usual stuff we find in all processed foods. I recently crossed them off my list, but they’re not likely to hinder ketosis. Depends how fussy you are about clean food smile

Tiny amounts. Look at the nutritional values:
for 100g
Fat 25.7g Grams
Carbohydrate 0.1g Grams
of which:
- Sugars 0.1g Grams
