I am currently having to wear my hearing aid due to losing my hearing in my right ear due to it being blocked with fluid. How do people cope with being in noisy places? All I can hear is the background noise and whistles basically.

Anyone else experience this?
Do you have a directional setting? That can help a bit with the background noise.

Thanks chaps. It is just a bog standard NHS one.

I think I know what is causing the whistling noise - I wasn't sitting the mould in fully, which I cannot do due to then causing me a problem with low frequency noises in my right ear. Kinda stuffed really.

If you can't get a new mould try my stock HA answer, a smear of Vaseline. Helps to seal it and stop the feedback...

I use Optilube, same stuff hospitals use. My aids are NHS ones and they supply me with new molds every 2-3 years. Its also very important to keep them very clean.

Closure, actual proper closure.

Managed to sneak one more op in seven weeks ago and....

I can hear party

I had a TORP fitted again, this time it has worked properly. No need for a hearing aid, I can hear better without it now than I could with it in!

The ear is still popping and cracking a bit as it heals but it's certainly useable in every real life situation. When it pops fully open my hearing is amazing, when it's closed it's still good enough.

23 hours of surgery in total with no recurrence of the disease after a couple of years, I'm going to enjoy every minute of this while I can bouncebiggrin

Hope you're all getting on OK.

That's great WW, glad it worked properly. It sounds like a delicate device, don't go around nutting people! biggrin

Nice one WW.

I had a hearing aid review. My balance has been a bit off recently (most likely stress as Mrs 22 is pretty poorly), but reviewed hearing "just in case". Slight deterioration but nothing drastic. Was given a newer version of the same. Oticon Synergy I think (Bucks NHS). I hate them! They are forever falling out of my ears. Not sure if need longer tubes or different domes, will order some bits and have a play. Also closed my local audiology so maybe time to go private.

If the balance issues get any worse get them checked out, ask the audiologist to 'check in the attic'. My condition is rare, so rare it's frequently missed. It's almost certainly not what I have but it's good to rule it out.

Brilliant news Rob!

So that's both of us with fixed hearing now.

You're not sorry in the slightest!

Yeah, went completely deaf in July/August of 2019 and got a cochlear implant in August last year.

I now have better hearing than I've ever had, right down to hearing stuff like the cat grooming herself.

Seriously cool tech as well - can control the whole thing from an app on my phone.

I'm using the same tech as this guy -

Coclear Nucleus 7? Cool bit of kit, my wife has one. With a GN Resound aid on the other ear.

Yup, Nucleus 7, and yes, brilliant tech.

How does your wife find it?

Great. She lost all hearing in her left ear about 20 years ago. She has about 25% in her right ear. She went against medical opinion to have the implant in the best ear and had it in the left, and it's worked out great. The hearing is different but compared to nothing, she says it's amazing. Then, with the GN Resound Enzo now in the right ear, with bluetooth, and the tv streamer and phone app, she can stream tv and calls / music to both ears. The GN Enzo runs on an app similar to the Cochlear Nucleus 7.

She also has the mini mike to clip onto other people's clothing if she's at a gym class or similar, so the instructor wears it.

But background noise and wind noise is a huge issue, even after fiddling with the settings. And she cannot locate sound at all. She can hear a woodpecker, but wouldn't know if it was in a tree in front of her, behind her, or sitting on her head!

Son has a pair of Nucleus 5 iirc. I hesitate to use the word but miraculous pretty much covers it.

I (Just boggo hearing aids...) find a hat/headband/hood helps massively with wind noise while not reducing volume too much.

That was quite a big gamble!

Essentially, you want to get the implant on the side in which the auditory nerve has had the highest degree (and most recent) stimulation.

Glad that it paid off for her though, but that's definitely not a gamble I'd have taken.

Nah, I agree, it really is astonishing.

Just wait until he get's the N7 - that will change the game again for him.
