Average weekly intake for me is about 1 or 2 bottles of beer or a G&T.
Some weeks I don't even drink any alcohol, I find I don't need it.
Nice , This is where I’d like to be some day .

My problem is I’m all or nothing so I’m either tea total or hammered
My best mate is like that. He hasn't had alcohol for 5 years now.

Indeed but I'm sure cigarettes are something like 90% tax. Do we see things going that way, eventually?
No, on the basis you can't make your own tobacco or petrol.

Not only can you grow your own tobacco, but you can make your own diesel - up to 2,500 litres/year are zero duty and zero paperwork.

If someone claims to be tea total do they wake up thinking about a hot beverage?

Sorry, but this is alarmist. I could be biased as a self confessed drinker, BUT: 0.6% increased chance of death by drinking 28 units a week (2 drinks a day). And that includes cancers / accidents. Whilst statistically there is a link between alcohol and chance of death; the increased chances are tiny. 0.6%, nothing. Even if the rise is exponential / non linear - @ my estimated 45units a week - I'd guess my increased chance of kicking bucket come in @ 1.2 - 2%

They need to do better at explaining the benefits of lifestyle balance / negatives of binging. I'd like to be in the low 30 units constantly, but not fussed going lower - I don't want to give up the social / cultural side of drinking.

Its not news, leaving my house results in a 100% increased chance of death by random nutter.
Completely agree, the problem with stuff like that it will be used as an excuse for more taxation and control.

The article should have been written like, "Being a teetotaler only increase your chances of living slightly longer by 0.6%. But increase the chances of you being a boring sod no one wants to hang about by 40%"

Has the Adrian Chiles telly program been on yet? He was touting it on the radio the other day, but I didn't get chance to listen.

Alcohol health researchers have exaggerated the risks of drinking – but that doesn’t mean we should ignore all expert advice

Anyone watching the Chiles show?

Interesting viewing. Time to reflect on what alcohol dependency is. It doesn't have to mean opening a can of lager first thing in the morning.

That was a very interesting programme. Understandably full of contradictions as he mulled over what he could do about his excessive intake, but at least he was be trying to look at all aspects, and involve a range of people with different skills and experiences.
Amazing that his health is actually quite poor and yet the simple liver test didn't indicate anything wrong.

I thought it was a bit dull. They could have made they a lot shorter.

I guess ITV have to get some value out of him. Is he still stiting on his big ITV contact? Is he on the tv these days?

I would have liked to have heard more from Frank Skinner - sober for about 30 years. Interesting that he said he still missed it (I gave up in 2012 and wish I'd done it years ago). He is always talking on his radio show about "cultural" things he's done which wouldn't be possible if he was still breakfasting on Pernod...

I was surprised at the number of people advising him to "cut down" when the nature of alcohol is that if you have one you want another.

Far far easier to quit completely imo. I had a nightmare cutting down but quit easily thanks to Allen Carr

But quitting isn’t necessary it’s just getting back to a very sensible level and then all should be fine.

It was on BBC2, no?

Interesting viewing, if slightly disturbing. The way his drinking racked up, with his midweek socials that he doesn't really notice that'd make most decidedly wobbly.

And then his ongoing denial. Despite totting up 100+ units he was telling people "40, 50, 60".

Best of luck to him, but he's 51 with high BP and incipient cirrhosis. He really needs to get a grip.

I found cutting down extremely difficult whereas stopping completely took no effort whatsoever after reading the Carr book.
