Sounds OK to me. I’d much rather die with a completely worn out, broken body with a few stores to tell than live to 90 with nothing to say.
It seems a curiously defensive attitude to equate "not drinking two bottles of wine every day" with having an empty life and "nothing to say". Out of interest and in the spirit of the thread, how much do you drink, honestly - and why do you think that not frequently drinking to excess makes you boring?
There are a few comments suggesting that a life without drink is somehow boring. That hasn't been my experience, and if you go to the "365 days without drink" thread on here, I think you'll find only positive experiences.

Health issues aside, drinking consumes vast amounts of time, energy and money - even a "quick pint" after work is half an hour and a fiver gone, Over the course of months and years it really adds up...

The question is, what do you do with that time and money? If you buy a huge TV and spend your time watching that then yes, perhaps it would be "better" to be socialising down the pub.

But - again if you look at the 365 days thread - most people who have given up drink, in an effort to "fill the time" have rekindled old hobbies or taken up new ones.

My experience - I gave up in 2012 (inspired by the 365 thread) in my mid 40s. I now cycle, swim and read a lot more, have taken up scuba diving and volunteer at a museum. I have lost touch with some "drinking buddies" but have made new friends in the meantime. I enjoyed my time drinking, but am glad I've stopped if that makes any sense...

Do the exhibits come to life at night? That indeed would be worth staying sober for.

Presumably, if you were pissed you would imagine that they came to life anyway ?.

This probably goes someway to explaining why my friends mother and grand mother (who both drink massive amounts) seemingly have no alcohol-related health issues at all.

while i'm aware the less you drink the 'better'. i hate how health nowadays is almost like a religion, based on beliefs rather then facts. people would rather listen to what their friend or someone they've googled on YT would say than a scientist or from a report from an experiement.

^ indeed - one could be forgiven for thinking if we just banish all bad habits that we’ll all live forever, such are the claims cited repeatedly in the press et al.

I don't think I'd forgive someone for thinking that, it's a pretty specious line of thought. But then I am a grumpy grudge holder (known to shorten your life expectancy).

yes I read somewhere else, possibly even on PH, about the person who gave up drinking, smoking, sex, drugs and whatever other vices, and were very healthy until they killed themselves smile

Perhaps a provocative question, but does the fear that life without booze means boredom and wishing you were dead not question your relationship with alcohol? I’m not judging, just genuinely curious. Sorry if I’ve misunderstood the context.

Not really. I like booze, I eat cake. I also ride a motorbike although not at the same time. Fact is most people who don’t know how to enjoy everything life has to offer are typically boring and joyless. Having a few drinks doesn’t make you an alcoholic any more than not drinking makes you interesting or destined to live a longer, happier life.

For me, too much, but I've taken steps in recent months to get a handle on it. I'm now likely at the 70-80 units a week point, but in recent years there have been times when I've been as high as maybe approaching double this.

I spent too long in a haze (during the day after too, feeling like crap) not motivated, it hindering my - at times - mental health woes.
I recently had a month off (ignoring our anniversary weekend) to 'reset the counter' so to speak.

Now I'm at the point where I stick to the beers (2-4 cans typically) Monday - Thursday, and allow my self a bottle of wine and maybe a few cans on weekend nights.

Feeling all the better for it too, but it has taken willpower.

I've got more than one vice. I probably won't end up giving up quite a few of them. To answer your question, in a roundabout way, without my vices (most of them) I'd probably start questioning my place on this earth. A 'pure' life seems like my idea of hell. But everyone is wired up different...

Why do you think he spends every minute of the day on here losing his temper, acting like his pants are too tight and pissing half of PH off?
laugh

On second thoughts he might be even worse after a drink, it could go either way.....

I reckon my weekly make up is 3 bottles of wine a week.

I’m sure this is way over the recommend allowance but maybe not as bad as some .

Fully intend this weekend to have no booze a cycle loads

Hmmm. Are you stalking me across Pistonheads? You seem obsessed. Your claims are somewhat ironic given that you appear to have a posting frequency in excess of fivefold greater than that of my own. You also went out of your way to launch a random, late night internet attack on a complete stranger, and even revisited it with renewed pettiness the following morning moan

But in any case, live and let live. Apologies if I offended you in some way with a perfectly civil question that I didn’t ask you. Enjoy the weekend, and don’t drink too much thumbup

Since when is sex a vice?

Also when cutting down alcohol I recall reading that having a few days off a week is more important than overall intake, gives the liver time to recover.

Sitting in each evening drinking is all well and good, but it isn't very rock-'n'-roll...
