How much do you drink, honestly?

My cardiologist disagrees - he says too much. As I was opened up recently for my own private showing of the Alien special effects, he thinks I need to cut down.
I think many people reading this may well know already that they are probably drinking a bit too much, it seems to be just a few who are in total denial. It would be nice to let this thread continue without judgements being made by others, so that any who have concerns over alcohol can feel free to come on here and talk freely....and credit due, so far, for our collective behaviour.
(Difficult subject, being discussed sensibly, on PH? Whit??!)
Completely agree. The cognitive dissonance is strong when it comes to booze. Particularly as you're more likely to surround yourself with people with similar habit. Plus there's always that one guy who drinks more and he's alright....
A reasonably anonymous forum provides a broader range of experiences to compare and contrast. A say broader, but the PH demographic seems to be middle aged lushes

Early 40s now and have had a recent normal LFT.
Good point. I had a LFT in May along with numerous others as I hadn’t seen the GP for many years, and at 40 they are recommended periodically. Every liver indicator was bang on the centre of the acceptable range (which surprised me as 10 years ago a couple were siding towards one end of the range, but not abnormal). Maybe it’s because I don’t binge drink like I did then, maybe not, who knows. I also appreciate even those with serious liver problems can return normal bloods. The GP did point out a couple of interesting facts I wasn’t aware of when I saw him to review the results. Firstly, he reckoned serious problems below the age of 40 were pretty rare in comparison with the hype surrounding the subject, unless the patient was hitting it very very hard. The liver is a bit like the rest of the body in the respect that while your young it can take more strain than in later life. Coupled with the ability to regenerate itself unlike other organs, it doesn’t necessarily mean overindulging in your teens/twenties will mean you die from it later in life, unlike smoking often can.
Drinking too much too often in later life is apparently a lot more dangerous than when you’re young. Secondly, only about 1 in 3 serious alcoholics go on to develop cirrhosis. A bit like not all smokers die from it, some live to old age and die from unrelated conditions. He quoted one guy he knew personally that was in his 80’s and had drank red every night for the majority of his life. He joked that the guy might as well carry on his lifestyle as he appears in fine health otherwise, the shock of giving up would probably kill him off now.
The conversation concluded with advice that my health was fine, and I should just be mindful that as I get older everything gradually needs more moderation - be it extreme exercise, stress, rollercoasters, bungee jumping......and of course alcohol.

Good thread Timing. I was off to a gig last night to meet a mate, on the way I called him and said first one there gets a whiskey... his response surprised me. He said "mate, you don't need an incentive, every time I see you on Facebook or in real life, you have a drink".
This hit me a little...
I realised pretty quickly my intake has probably increased... not helped by having a 2nd child 9 mths ago and being made redundant. I now have no routine and feel like I deserve a drink...
fk!
So I currently drink everyday, probably a minimum of 3 pints. But... I'm going to cut out the weekday drinks for a little while as this has got out of hand.
Thanks for making this thread, it was very well timed for me
Well I'd planned on not drinking tonight after this post... but the kids drove me to it!! Rough day, wine required This hit me a little...

A pint of decent beer - Otter, Golden Hare or Tanglefoot on a Friday evening and another on a Saturday evening.
Maybe half-a-dozen pints of the same at the rugby, or on a pub ride, but no more than once every couple of months. Anything but clean real ale gives me horrible hangovers.
There are more than twenty bottles of single malt in the house dating back to when I used to drink a bit more often.

So this week I expect
Monday zero
Tuesday zero
Wednesday zero
Thursday zero
Sunday zero
Friday 4 beers 600ml
Sat half bottle of prosecco 4 bottles of Cidar billers 600ml.
I’m intending no bonus beers hidden bottles (and this needs to be all the time). This thread and a few posters have really opened my eyes thank you for that

Your comments about beer bottles reminds me..
In the months leading up to me giving up booze, I discovered real ales and speciality beers (nice!) which tend to come in small glass bottles. Our glass recycling had it's own small tub which you put out next to the paper/cans sulo bin. Seeing how many glass beer bottles had accumulated every 2 weeks was a real eye-opener. Perviously, the cans would get burried under the newspapers and wrappers in the other bin and you wouldnt see them.

Will probably have a couple of drinks over the Christmas period but other than that, nothing day to day.
I'm much the same. I had a G&T on Friday followed by a glass of wine and just a glass of wine on Saturday as I was driving on Sunday. I might buy a bottle ot two to last over Christmas/New Year but I might equally well go without; it's no big deal either way for me.Riley Blue said:

Will be buying a few bottles but they’ll be for family and friends, not me. Don’t mind the odd beer or wine but I just don’t seem to fancy it these days. Saying that I did fancy a nice glass of red with some pasta last week, but didn’t have any in the rack so went without.

We have a weekly collection, sometimes when I tip the house recycling tub - which is a large garden waste bucket - into the recycling bin it sounds like closing time at the pub.My wife and I like our wine & beer, recently Mrs P has started drinking G&Ts which is a nice change but probably puts the alcohol intake up a bit as it's so nice to drink. I think between my wife and I we've both ended up in a habit of drinking especially early week where we just reach for the wine bottle after work and settle down in front of the TV. I guess we may have got somewhat conditioned to drinking, I don't particularly feel a hangover the next day unless I go over 1 bottle of wine, or 6-7 pints of beer.
So below is for me, and this is usually a routine week, without a dinner party (1 bottle of wine min), trip to the pub (usually 5+ pints):
Sunday - couple of pints over lunch at the pub, share half a bottle of wine in the evening
Monday - 1-2 glasses of wine
Tuesday - 1-2 glasses of wine
Wednesday - 1-2 glasses of wine
Thursday - G&T & 2 glasses of wine to 1/2 bottle
Friday - 2 pints at lunch, 1-2 beers after work, 2 beers at home
Saturday - 2 G&Ts 2 pints, 1/2-1 bottle of wine, couple of shots of rum or bourbon.

Thats me done for a few weeks now. That was a heavier weekend and has took it out of me!
If that’s a usual week then that’s pretty punchy. Saturday - 15 pints
Sunday - 12 pints.

Though reminds me of my Uni days + Monday/ Wednesday ... + the odd extra here and here....
Strange when we popped back to the old Uni bars we frequented it was deadly quiet. Appears kids these days drink far less or have less £ to do so.
I drink about as little as it's possible to drink without being classed as teetotal, I probably average about one drink every month or two. I had a single cognac two weeks ago, a few French ciders on holiday in early September, a couple of glasses of wine in August and that might well be it for this year.
There are several reasons for this besides the usual money and health arguments:
There are several reasons for this besides the usual money and health arguments:
- I see drinking as a social activity, I have a fairly limited social life and what there is of it usually involves me driving
- Since I've been training seriously I seem to metabolise alcohol ridiculously quickly, I go right through the warm and happy phase and on the sober feeling with a headache in about 45 minutes
- Whenever I used to drink much at all I'd get a cold or flu the day after
- I hate being intoxicated in public, makes me feel completely helpless. I don't understand guys that get fighty with some booze in them as I'm liable to lose a fight with a door or flight of stairs after a couple of pints.
- Drunk people are awful to be around and I'd rather not be like that myself.
